Product Description

Rod Steiger stars in this acclaimed adaptation of the Thomas Mann’s masterpiece – one of the most influential German novels of the 20th century.

Hans Castorp (Christopher Eichorn), a son of a distinguished Hamburg family, visits his cousin in a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps. After falling ill, Hans is also admitted to the asylum, where he remains isolated for seven long years. Upon the outbreak of World War I, Hans volunteers for the military and leaves the “magic mountain” to experience life for the first time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing picture quality, January 28, 2010

This review is from: Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain (DVD)
A higly welcome reissue of the original full-lenght 3-part TV serial. The abridged movie theatre version was already available on DVD. Unfortunately, this reissue is a total diaster as far as the technical transfer is concerned, it looks like a pirate product. This is a real shame!

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing key scenes from novel The Magic Mountain, November 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain (DVD)
This two disk / 2 part version is lousy. It misses some key scenes including the important scene in the snow and also the Settermbrini & Naphta's discussions, both key to plot of the novel. These scenes were shown in the 2 disk 3 part earlier film version. Also, Joachim seems to randomly die at the start of disk 2 for no reason. And the casting of Clavdia is questionable, as she does not appear to the gorgeous siren she's depicted as in the novel or in the earlier 3 part film version. And the casting of Hans is also questionable, as he looks like he is 17 instead of 24. Book > this movie version. 2 out of 5 stars. Disappointing.
