1.0 out of 5 stars great music but dreadful sound, April 22, 2005

I bought this album after reading glowing reviews here. I already had some idea of the sweet charming music and badly wanted a recording. But the sound quality is probably the worst I have ever heard on an opera album. Recorded live in Mexico in 1949 the sound is like recordings from 20 years earlier. I find it almost impossible to listen. Mignon was recently performed live in New York City which means someone is interested in reviving it. I'd advise waiting for a new album no matter how desperate you are.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorest sound quality ever, May 28, 2005
This review is from: Thomas: Mignon (Mexico City, 28.06.1949) (Audio CD)
I myself sang in the chorus of this opera in New York City recently, and just wanna keep a CD recording for myself. After weeks of delay I finally got this CD, but it was so disappointing. The sound quality of the recording was the poorest I've ever heard. It could be worse than anything you could hear through a radio station when you are in the middle of a desert. And through the poor sound quality, somehow the lyrics didn't sound like French to me. Sorry, it is too unclear and I totally don't know what's going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ambroise at his best, June 14, 2000

When I first heard this album I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It is a stunning example of Thomas Ambroise's genius. He is not well known to the average Joe on the street but he should be. If you are tired of the "old masters" then try Thomas Ambroise; you will find youself delight with his originality. The music is uplifting. His melodic sensibilities and mixing of voices is sublime. Go for it!
