Ferdinand is one of the three "Logging Locos" (along with Bash & Dash) who first appeared in 2010's Misty Island Rescue DVD. Definitely a "gentle giant", Ferdinand is bigger and slower than his two co-workers, and can make special "tweeting" sounds when he whistles (in the movie, that is... not in Take-n-Play's train). All of the other engines that have tenders carry coal, but Ferdinand runs on wood and oil, and his tender is full of wood chips. (However, our grandson always insisted that they're chocolate chips!) Painted an attractive teal with grey lining and a total of 12 matching teal wheels, he has a semi-circular symbol depicting 3 yellow trees with 2 brown axes crossing each other on both sides of his cab and tender. We paid $8.99 for our oldest grandson's back in 2010 as part of the beginning of what would become a complete 4 year collection of Take-n-Play. These models back then were just SO terrific - weighty feeling diecast metal, an incredible amount of detailing - we were so happy with our investment, and our grandson enjoyed deciding which of his gang would see action each day! If you're planning to purchase Ferdinand for your youngster, he's also part of a themed 3-pack (Muddy Ferdinand), there's a talking version as well, but if you want the non-talking version, THIS is the model you want... there's a plasticized, stripped down version coming out in 2015 (model #CBL89) that doesn't do this great character justice.

We've added two more grandsons since then and had fully planned to keep our collection going. Unfortunately, we'd seen some distressing signs of a quality downturn beginning in 2013 that led us to stop collecting at the end of the year.

Ferdinand is plenty of fun for my now 3 yr old. He has twin bothers Bash and Dash and we have all 3 trains along with the Misty Island Rescue Station. It's a take and play set so, we take it and it's played with. He recieved it for his 3re B-day and has hours of fun with it. His imangination is infinite and he does learn with his Thomas video's and applies it to life. This is good Stuff...

Got this for my 2 year old son. He has several Thomas trains, both the wooden railway and the pack and play. We have gotten way more use out of these then any other toy.

Though Ferdinand is a bit of a minor character in the shows/books, he does have some differences that make him unique. His tinder has wood in it, not coal. The wheels on his engine also rotate, the front two separately from the back two. This has caused a little frustration on the part of my 2-year-old, as when you don't have it on a track they kind of just go what ever way they want, usually not the same direction, so you end up just dragging an axle.

However the product is well made, and one of the cheaper Thomas trains, so makes a great addition to any Thomas collection.

When I got this character, definitely looks like the promo pic and nothing missing. This is a very detailed character as well, soo I would recommend this if you want to catch up with the upcoming movie, Misty Island Rescue. Now for Bash and Dash to be released for this range...

This was one of my son's favorite toys until we got him the whole train and tracks set. I did not realize that the take-n-play trains have smaller wheels than normal trains--the wheels are way too small to move properly on the tracks, so Ferdinand has been sitting in our train bin for a while now. Otherwise, a durable, nice-colored train though. We especially like the long and strong magnets that connect the tender to the train--much better than the round magnets of other trains.
