In today's multitude of Study Bibles, the Thomspson Chain stands out as a classic. What makes it so unique and helpful is its use of scripture to study scripture. Insted of recieveing a footnote from a scholar or commentater, the reader is directed to other passages in the Bible that iluminates the subject. Exhaustably searchable, endlessly informative, the Thompson Chain is a must-have for any student of God's Word.

This bible makes it easy to participate in a study or even lead one. The chain references, the historical references and the highlights of prominent characters are really handy. I'm on my second one (NASB), after wearing the first (NIV) one out. This is a safe bible, in that you don't have to worry about the bottom of each page filled with somebody's doctrinally-skewed commentary telling you that you do or don't have to believe the scriptures written above. I say this irregardless of your doctrinal beliefs. You can't go wrong with a Thompson Chain Reference Bible.
