Editorial Reviews

Review
"The word 'Genetics' makes most students' minds fill with dreaded thoughts of Mendel's peas and Darwin's beard but the reality is that it is now, more than ever, one of the most important subjects in medicine along with the likes of anatomy and physiology. This book helps cement this key subject in the minds of all students. It is written in a clear and approachable manner, terminology is explained and diagrams are used to emphasises and clarify. The authors have structured this well, beginning with the very basic concepts of genetics and inheritance then building on to the more clinical topics such as diseases resulting from mutations. Each chapter ends with a list of questions which test what the student has learnt whilst reading a particular chapter. These questions are also a very good revision tool. If you want to learn genetics buy this book." -- Medical Student, Cardiff University, UK

"The bolded words in the text are of excellent help to a student. These make sure that you know their meaning before moving on...very informative and reader-friendly for medical students!" -- Medical Student, University of Bergen, Norway

Book Description
The "Genetics Bible" that through six editions has integrated the classic principles of human genetics with modern molecular genetics to help students understand a wide range of genetic disorders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, August 27, 2007
This is a quite comprehensive and general overview of medical genetics, with perhaps more focus on scientific research than clinical practice, although both are well represented.

However, this is a rapidly changing field of research, and some of the newest techniques (such as whole genome association studies) and most informative websites (such as SNPedia) that are insufficiently addressed in this edition will presumably get caught only in the (hopefully frequent) future editions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Study Guide for the ABMG Exam!!!, April 1, 2008
This is a great study guide for the American Board of Medical Genetics exam. It covers cytogenetics and molecular genetics in depth, and also discusses other important concepts such as Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Population Genetics, Genomics, and single gene and complex inheritance.
I have not used the on-line access feature yet, but I have noticed a lot of improvements from the previous printed edition, including reorganized chapters, new/updated end-of-chapter questions, new statistics based on a more updated human gene count/information, and new sections on array comparative genomic hybridization. Overall, it would be essential to own this book if you're studying for the ABMG board exam, although I would also recommend supplementing your studies with other resouces to be more comprehensively prepared.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for med school, March 29, 2009

(REAL NAME)
The book is very good on human genetics, but lack on other forms of life specialy prokarios if you seek a better understanding of evolution, or want a better molecular part, a deeper understanding I suggest you go after a Griffith/Suzuki or Snustad perharps
