This review is from: Thomson Masterpiece Bicycle Seat Post (Sports)
This is simply the best seatpost available. It is incredibly light weight, and the one-piece CNC-machined post and bottom mount makes it reliable (many other light-weight seatposts have the mount physically pressed into the post). I have both the non-set back and set back versions of this post (27.2x240), and i think they're fantastic. The seat angle is easy to micro-adjust (and a clevery notched indicator helps you preserve settings), and the fore-aft saddle position is also simple.
Typically I'm not a weight-weenie, but there's no sense in having additional weight so high above the bicycle's center of gravity--you feel it in the climbs, cornering,... everywhere. The Thomson seatpost (married to a a good saddle) means I feel no weight or swing up top, and therefore more focus on the response of my bike on the road (at the wheels/fork and pedals/crank). The saddle's light weight also seems to mean a more comfortable ride for me; perhaps because there is less mass to develop harmonic vibrations or channel vibrations up through my sits-bones? I don't know for sure, but it is much more comfortable for me than my old heavy stock seatpost, especially over medium and longer distance (40+ miles). For the record, I'm 5'9" and about 160#; i ride about 5k-7k miles a year, hauling kids, light touring, and lots of club and recreation rides. I don't race, unless i'm late for work. And here's the odd kicker--even with my old chunky Brooks Pro saddle on my Thomson seatpost the bike felt more responsive and more comfortable. The Brooks didn't work for me (after 4k miles; YMMV), and now I use a Selle Italia with even better results. It's like riding on air, it's so light and quick. The only problem i could envision for this seatpost are clydes/athenas who may need something much, much more rugged. You really can't have it all, all of the time. That light weight and quickness comes at a minimum. You wouldn't, without some trepidation, give a clyde/athena a 16-spoke radially laced set of wheels either. Design and application basics. This seatpost is made in the USA from a CNC'd single-piece of Aluminum. I'd place it's quality and reliability miles above the numerous foreign-made carbon seatposts with pressed aluminum mounts for a host of obvious reasons (basic design, quality control, materials, etc.). While aluminum generally does have a low fatigue life compared to steel, it's no worse than carbon, and in this case the Thomson's ovalized post is superior. Bottom line: There are other cheaper, almost as light seatposts, and they'll do very nicely. But if you want the very best, then this is it.

Bought this after numerous reviews on other sites, and it still lives up to its reputation. It's light and rigid with a degree of flex, the offset model has me in just the right position.
Worth every cent and the shipping didn't let me down!! Forget eBay, this stuff arrived quick! |
