5.0 out of 5 stars Simonson's excellent Thor vision, volume 3, May 25, 2008

This review is from: Thor Visionaries - Walt Simonson, Vol. 3 (Paperback)
Walt Simonson's famous Thor run is currently collected in 5 trade paperbacks; he writes & draws the 1st three, and then mostly just writes the last two. My favorite volumes are the 1st three, but the entire run is really well done.

Highlights here for me...
*Issue 363- Beyonder & Kurse! Thor returns to earth and accidentally stumbles into Kurse, the Beyonder, Power Pack, and Beta Ray Bill. I love the characterizations and content of this issue all the way through, and it ends by setting up a rather famous storyline.
*Issues 364 to 366- Thor Frog! It's a 3-part story I thought I'd never see. A certain helpless Frog needs to return to Asgard to prevent someone else from taking his throne. The challenge is doing it in this rather limited physical state. Has to be seen to be believed!
*Issue 367- The new beard of Thor. Thor gets a new look as Asgard gets a new king. Simonson's last regular pencils on the series; Sal Buscema is the regular penciler starting with the next issue.

Volume 3 features Simonson's beautiful artwork at its most refined state to date. Because 1st printings of volumes 2 & 3 in this series are currently hard to find, they tend to be expensive. If you can get a good price, I *highly* recommend these volumes. They're some of Marvel's best comics from the exciting mid-eighties, and they're made with super-slick & sturdy, glossy paper. Future printings use a lighter & cheaper, though still good quality, grade of paper.

Included in this volume:
*Issues #360 to #366- Walt Simonson writes, pencils & inks
*Issue #367- Walt Simonson writes & pencils; Bob Wiacek, Milgrom & Simonson inks
*Issue #368- Walt Simonson writes; Sal Buscema pencils & inks
*Issue #369- Walt Simonson writes; Sal Buscema pencils; Geoff Isherwood inks

P.S. Great news for Thor fans: Thor Visionaries: Walter Simonson Volume 1 TPB (New Printing) is being re-released, with high-quality color reconstruction & better paper. It's set to be released this next year! It'd be nice to see the cover of Thor 337 or 338 as that TPB's cover.

Amazon got the cover wrong (from the second) and the reviews are mixed up but this is the third book.

now Walt Simonson's Thor is a grand epic, i never noticed till reading them in these collected editions how it's not just a story arc and then finished but one long story, has soem really great moments and is a must buy for any Thor Fans or just a fan of wonderful stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Croak!, April 22, 2008
This review is from: Thor Visionaries - Walt Simonson, Vol. 3 (Paperback)
Really, that's what you will do when you see the prices for this volume -- CROAK! It's hard to believe that this is going for nearly $100 for an "out of print" book when the first two are just as "out of print", yet still cover price.
But if you manage to get a hold of this at a REASONABLE price, you can relive the highlight of Walt Simonson's run with the death of the Executioner, the rise of Kurse, the Frog of Thunder and highly-contriversial beard of Thor.
Collects THOR #360-369 written and drawn by Simonson himself, until he hands over the art chores to Sal Buscema with #368.
All-in-all, a good read and not to be missed if collecting the other 4 TPBs...
