I am writing this review because my dog just chewed up my socks (literally 5 minutes ago) and I am so terribly upset, I had to come on the internet to find more. These are my favorite socks for skiing and just laying around the house in the winter time. The thickness of the sock is perfect and I love that it's slightly thicker on the shin and around your ankle. When I go skiing, I don't even need to wear any other socks but these. As you can imagine, it's much easier to put a boot on and your toes can actually move within the boot (which also helps keep your feet warm). I love the arch support as well. What can I say, these were my favorite socks. I've had them since 2005 (4 years) and they were never torn, there were no holes, not even a lose string until my damn dog got a hold of them!! I MUST have more! When I originally bought these in a ski shop, there was only black. I am thrilled there are different colors. If you're looking for a perfect ski sock, look no further.

I am cursed with extremely narrow feet and ankles, which was an incredible burden growing up as a competitive athlete, particularly for an alpine ski racer. My feet are also flat, so I must wear orthonic inserts in all my athletic shoes, including my ski boots. These Thorlo thick-cushioned ski socks were an essential part of my alpine gear during my racing career. With the combination of a pair of these socks, plus another pair with the feet cut-off as a second layer for my shins/calves/ankles, plus custom "Zip-Fit" injection-molded ski boot liners, I was finally able to achieve the super tight fit with my Nordica Grand Prix racing boots that I needed to have precision control over my skis for slalom and giant slalom.

These Thorlo thick-cushioned socks are FANTASTIC for anyone with narrow feet, for anyone who is having trouble getting your ski boots tight enough (try a ½ size smaller boot), or simply for anyone having issues with blisters and padding for their feet in regular everyday boots and shoes. I wear them skiing, hiking, and pretty much anytime I am wearing work boots or uncomfortable dress shoes. The are very warm and dry in the Winter, but stay fairly cool in the Summer. The price is pretty steep, but they are definitely worth every penny, and made in the USA. As for durability, I purchased about a dozen pairs of these socks between 1990 and 1996 when I was racing, and the padding JUST started to wear out this past season (hence why I searched for them here on Amazon). To reiterate, that is about 15-20 years of heavy wear, and hundreds of wash cycles!! These Thorlo socks are not only the best ski socks, but the best overall socks I have ever worn.

If you were lucky enough to be blessed with "normal" feet, then these particular socks may be too thick for you.

Might as well keep this review deservedly five star. I'm not currently a skier but I like to hike in winter and this IS the sock to beat. Not only keeps the whole lower leg warm (which keeps the feet warmer) but the cushioning, heat retention, and moisture control is exceptional. I was just 1/2 size over the parameters for the medium but I got it anyway (other sizes were sold out!) and it fits fine because the material is a little stretchy. These are effective with the hiking shoes and boots I've tried them with so far and I expect they will prove to be worth the money. You get what you pay for. I'll get another pair or two (if I can find any - wish Amazon's supplier would re-stock with these). Recommended.

Addendum: got another three pair in size Large. Fit better. Just tried them today with my Sorel winter boots and found them to be the best sock I've ever used, warm, comfortable, and they protect from boot chafing on the shin with extra thickness there in these calf length socks from Thorlos using two types of artificial fiber that wick moisture away and provide thick cushioning and warmth. You can never have enough good socks.

My friend gave me a pair of these socks a few years ago telling me that they were the best for alpine skiing. I tried them a few times and agreed. This year I got lazy. My feet don't get cold so I decided to forgo these socks and wear light socks. Big mistake! My feet were loose in the boots and I had no connection between the foot and the ski. Clumpy powder snow and no control ended in disaster. These socks help fill the ski boot, are very comfortable and really a great sock. The padding comes where the boot pressure points are. The top of the sock can be rolled over once to pad the top of the boot where it hits my shins.
I'm ordering a few more pair of these just for comfort.

Needs to b 2-3 inches longer. Barely came over calf. My wife bought these and she's 5'3, 107lbs, and shoe size is 7.5.
She bought these socks 3-4 yrs ago ago &, bak then, they were perfect length. We bought online and went skiing the next day after they arrived. Had we purchased in a store, they wud hav been returned.
