Biography

Those artists who find themselves stuck in deep ruts two decades into their careers could learn a thing or two from veteran singer-songwriter Kim Richey. She’s never been afraid to go where the inspiration is, recording each of her first six albums with different collaborators in different locales. For her seventh album, Thorn In My Heart, she decided to do something quite brave for a ... Read more in Amazon's Kim Richey Store

Editorial Reviews

Kim Richey's Yep Roc debut album is a smart, sensual understatement that may be one of her best. The dozen songs themselves show that Richey's still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart. The array of top-tier guests include Trisha Yearwood, Jason Isbell, Wilco's Pat Sansone, My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel, and Will Kimbrough.

Kim Richey's music is bliss. Her voice is lovely and poignant and her songwriting is magnificent. She is a true storyteller. London Town and Come On are early favorites from this record, the latter containing a great harmony vocal from Trisha Yearwood, and both showing how, even after seven albums, she still crafts pure musical gems. If you ever get to the chance to see her live, please go. She is always outstanding and always generous to stay after and meet fans.

A sure sign of a great record is getting to the end of it with a big smile on your face and being excited to start it all over again. That's "Thorn In My Heart."

Kim Richey has never gotten the accolades she deserves. Her voice is clear as a mountain stream, and the production on this CD is simply outstanding. Put on this CD, grab a glass of wine and just relax to her sweet music. I have most her CD's and this one is the best in years....not one clunker in the dozen tunes here. Someone tell me why she isn't a household name? Listening to it right now, so stop reading this and go download the dang thing....go! ;-)

Kim does it again with that crystal-clear voice on another eagerly awaited fine batch of songs. After recent albums, I found a slight ear adjustment required for some of the more country-flavored tracks but it's full of great stuff - early favorites 'I will wait' and 'Take me to the other side'. No probs here for one of my albums of the year.

I've read the reviews coming in for this new record, most agree she has such a sterling voice, just full of melodic mood and such a great writer, no wonder so many of her songs hit big with top country artists. Kim Richey and her music is more than just a country song. Her music blends so many styles and on Thorn in my Heart she is looking inward and not with much joy but sometimes this makes for such intense music. Although this collection leans more on the country side, the shades blend also towards Americana, folk and pop traditions and the melodies she pulls out of heartbreak are outstanding. Great moody atmospheres with a somewhat stripped down direction put Kim Richey's vocal front and center, one of my favorite collections put out this year.

Since I bought her first cd on a whim during a visit to Boston almost 20 years ago, I've followed Kim Richey, and through thick and thin, she's always produced magnificent music. This is no exception, but it IS exceptional. Tasteful tunes, sensitive lyrics, great playing and production from real musicians as opposed to garageband virtuosos. Love her.

This lady can write, compose, play and sing... anyone who has heard her previous work knows this.
Comparing Kim Richey to other artists is not helpful. It is better to just recommend that you try this CD. I think it provides a good initiation into her world. A world view that is pretty honest and even soothingly comfortable given the warmth and clarity of her unique, beautiful voice. Who needs pictures when you have these words expressed with her voice? ---Thanks Kim

The lyrics are up to her standard, but the music doesn't offer much variance. There's a musical lethargy that pervades.
