The ongoing adventures of detective John Evelyn Thorndyke, M.D.

Originally a medical doctor, Dr. Thorndyke turned to the bar and became one of the first forensic scientists--referred to as a 'medical jurispractitioner.'

Dr. Thorndyke's solutions were based on the method of collecting all possible data and making inferences from them before looking at any of the protagonists and motives in the crimes.

He is usually assisted by his friend, Christopher Jervis and the resourceful Nathaniel Polton, his crinkly-faced lab technician.

In this volume:
Book One: The Singing Bone aka The Adventures of Dr Thorndyke
Five distinct tales of intrigue, romance, mutiny and murder. The ingenuity of these detective stories lies in their fresh and original approach in what amounts to a tantalising read.

Book Two: A Silent Witness
On a wet and windy silent night in the sleeping city of London, the body of a man is found sprawled across Millfield Lane. An enchanting Dr Thorndyke mystery.

Book Three: The Great Portrait Mystery and Other Stories
The National Portrait Gallery is the opening setting for this delightful mystery of theft and fraud...

Book Four: Helen Vardon's Confession
Through the open door of a library, Helen Vardon hears an argument that changes her life forever...

Full of intrigue and adventure, these classic novels are a must for mystery fans!

I had never read Dr Thorndyke before, and I really like these stories. They are of the genre of Sherlock Holmes and Christie's Perot. Great reading.

I have found the Dr. Thorndyke mysteries to be as good, or better, than many of the mysteries written today. They have a dephth to the stories that is often missing in our current literature, and the stories are amazingly modern in their feel. Of course, you have the period piece of England in the early 20th century, but somehow the stories do not seem dated. The mysteries are also exciting. You keep reading because the story is truly interesting. Forensic evidence is brought to bear, as well as points of law in relation to medical jurisprudence. I find them very believable and plausible, and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. They have somewhat of the feel of a Sherlock Holmes story in a more genteel manner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good so far, August 23, 2010
This review is from: Dr. Thorndyke Mysteries Collection, Volume Two (Four Books in One Volume!) (Kindle Edition)
I have read the first book in the collection and I found the book to be wonderfully formatted. The book was well written but I knew who did it and more or less how by the 5th chapter (there are 17 in the book) so the rest was enjoying the writing and the side action. I will read the other books.
