Product Description

Product Packaging: Standard Packaging

Thorne Research 5-MTHF 1 mg, 60 Vegetarian Capsules Folic acid must be converted to its active forms to be used by the body. This is a multi-step biochemical process that occurs in the intestines and liver. In the presence of intestinal or liver dysfunction this conversion may not occur sufficiently enough to meet the body's needs. Furthermore, up to 60-percent of the U.S. population may have a genetic enzyme defect that makes it difficult for them to convert folic acid into active 5-MTHF. For these individuals and many others, 5-MTHF supplementation may be a more effective method of folate repletion. Because deficiencies of folic acid have been linked to low-birth-weight infants and neural tube defects, folic acid requirements double during pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends folic acid supplementation for all women of childbearing age because the biggest need is during the first trimester, when a woman may not even be aware she is pregnant. It is important for women of childbearing age to get enough folic acid, not just those who are planning to become pregnant. Only 50 percent of pregnancies are planned, so any woman who could become pregnant should get enough folic acid every day, especially before conception and during early pregnancy.

My niece is a doctor specializing in nutrition. When I showed her my latest blood test results, she noted that my homocysteine level was more than twice the normal level. She recommended this, which is activated folate, to get the folate to move through to all the necessary places in the body. She also recommended taking B12 sublingually to assist the process, plus to aid in energy level, which is reduced because of the folate issue. The proof is in the pudding: my blood tests six months later showed a reduction of homocysteine from 26 to 12! The recommended level is 10.4, according to what was printed on the results, and she said 8 is an optimum level. So I will definitely be taking this from now on, and this was the brand she recommended.

I have hereditary genetic neuro-muscular disease, severe fibromyalgia (51 years of it), chronic myofascial pain syndrome (as a result of experimental electified acupuncture treatments which took large permanently hardened muscle knots and softened them but turned them into many dime-sized trigger points) and general neuropathy. I am under treatment by two Spine and Pain Clinics - one for drugs and one for trigger point injections.

When I was prescribed that disastrous drug Cymbalta I developed amongst other things ulcers on both feet. At that time the doctor who was treating me at the foot clinic prescribed Metanx, a very expensive prescription nerve 'food' that combined several highly absorbable hybridized vitamins used to combat Neuropathy. While the dosage in Metanx was far too low to be effective versus the high co-pay, reading the extensive accompanying literature on the ingredients got me very curious about them.

About that same time an article on the use in Germany of Benfotiamine in high doses to combat neuropathy appeared in a The People's Pharmacy article in our newspaper (also on the web). My neuropathic pain was increasing massively. The left foot was numb at the site of the ulcer - whereas the pain with the right foot ulcer was excruciating. The left hand hurt all the way to the shoulder.

I began looking for those hybridized vitamins - particularly on Amazon - and reading customer reviews like this one over a few months which led me to this fine product - containing the Methylfolate variant I had been looking for but had not previously found anywhere else.

When I suggested he try this product, I never imagined it would eliminate his panic attacks. However, it did. It's been about 6 months (and he is about twice as stressed at work nowadays), but he hasn't had a panic attack since starting this product, and his overall anxiety is way down. He's also less cranky;). No idea if this will help other people with panic attacks, but thought I'd pass it along as it has changed his life. He initially started on the 1mg dose, and has titrated up to 5mg.

All my life I had fatigue issues. Post menopause, it was hell. More than fatigue, I knew I was losing it. It would take me till noon to wake up. Thankfully, I hustled my butt and looked for answers till I finally understood about the methylation cycle Now, methylation has to do with how well the body does with folic acid or folate. I'm not a chemist, so please bear with me. Manufacturers now fortify cereal products with folic acid. However, some of us who have a couple different gene variants can't use folic acid in the metabolic pathways. We need it to be converted to a methylized product. When you read methyl, think methane...one carbon atom. That's all it takes to convert folic acid to a useable form, one stinkin' carbon atom, and my body fails me. I have a family history of people having cardiovascular events like heart attacks and blood clots and so I managed to get my physician to order the gene test. Turns out,I had gotten a bad, bad variant from each of my parents. Now the interesting thing is the unauthorized connection to autism, and chronic fatigue and fibromylagia. As regards, autism, we may have to crowd source to have the research done, but there is already a tenuous connection. Like this: "Cerebral folate receptor autoantibodies in autism spectrum disorder." Cut, paste and search. All I can say is there my extended family has a lot of kids who are not neurotypical, but my daughter takes it, and her moods REALLY leveled out. This is magical stuff, when you need it.

With anything as nebulous as changing one's body proceses, it's difficult to positively point to X and say that 'X did this' or 'X stopped that'.
So I'll just say that since taking 5-MTHF - about 5 - 6 weeks - my restless legs have quieted WAY down (and I enjoy the distinction of having the most violent case of RLS ever seen at a major medical institute's Sleep Studies Dep't.)
It could be that, after 25 years, my RLS just gave up and went away. This is unlikely.
It could be that the 5-MTHF filled in some blank in my neurology and that quieted the RLS.
It is that I will continue using 5-MTHF because I want nothing to do with a recurrence of RLS.
I'll post an addendum if things change ... or if they don't.
But ... so far, so good.
