5.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you like a Lovely Fungus
Being a gigantic Moxy Fruvous fan myself, I was disappointingly suprised when I first heard Thornhill. I thought to myself "This isn't the Fruvous I grew to love from B and Bargainville!" Wha' Happen'?" But then, I lent this CD to my friend, about two years ago. And he has yet to return my copy. I began to miss this CD so much, that's how good it is. It...

3.0 out of 5 stars okay, not great
Although this album has some really beatiful songs, if you're new to the band, bargainville, wood, or maybe even live noise is a better choice. Splatter Splatter and Sad Girl are both excellent songs, but on a general level the album just doesn't measure up with what a real moxy fan would expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grows on you like a Lovely Fungus, April 7, 2004
This review is from: Thornhill (Audio CD)
Being a gigantic Moxy Fruvous fan myself, I was disappointingly suprised when I first heard Thornhill. I thought to myself "This isn't the Fruvous I grew to love from B and Bargainville!" Wha' Happen'?" But then, I lent this CD to my friend, about two years ago. And he has yet to return my copy. I began to miss this CD so much, that's how good it is. It simply grows on you. It shows how versatile a group Fruvous is; they don't simply tickle your funny bone, but they are poignant and harmonius. Earthquakes will be in your head all day, as will Sad Girl and Downsizing. Long story short, I had to buy a new one, and it was worth it. Better than pirating a copy. Fruvous needs money too. If you are a fan of Fruvous, of music, or of life in general, Thornhill is a must-have that will grow on you over time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice CD, But Not Their Best Effort, March 6, 2000
This review is from: Thornhill (Audio CD)
I am crazy for Moxy. I discovered them several years ago on the local public radio station. They hooked me with KING OF SPAIN from their Bargainville CD. I hunted that CD down and have been a Fruvous fan ever since. My CD changer is full of their CDs. Sadly, THORNHILL doesn't have the punch of their previous efforts. Their prior releases are dense with terrific and very listenable songs. Thornhill, while a fine recording, just isn't as enjoyable on the whole as YOU WILL GO TO THE MOON or BARGAINVILLE or the other albums. SPLATTER, SPLATTER and I WILL HOLD ON do stand out as brilliant songs, but the rest of the disc is forgettable. I love these canadians and am hoping for a finer, future effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth taking the time to appreciate., July 25, 2003
This review is from: Thornhill (Audio CD)
I admit: the first time I listened to Thornhill, I was a bit dubious. It didn't have anything like the wacky wit or catchy melodies of previous Fruvous albums (except for "Splatter Splatter," which has both in abundance).

To my surprise, the album grew on me over time. I found myself humming "Hate Letter" while driving to work. The more I listened to the album, the more I came to appreciate it. "Sad Girl"'s lyrics nicely walk the balance between serious and sarcastic, and "Earthquakes!" has an undeniable groove. The romantic side of me likes "I Will Hold On," and "If Only You Knew," and the Fruhead in me loves the inevitable puns that appear even in Fruvous' ballads ("I'll hold your breath if that won't make you blue").

I wouldn't recommend this album to someone new to Fruvous, but fans shouldn't overlook it; there's hidden gold in here.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little bit different, July 17, 2004

This review is from: Thornhill (IMPORT) (Audio CD)
I'd probably rate this CD higher if I weren't focussing mainly on the fact that it's Moxy Fruvous. This CD is very different from what most people would have come to expect from them.

This CD is much more on the side of pop music, as it is very light music, and lacks the fun light-hearted humour normally present in their other music. Instead, you get a mellow, sardonic humour that doesn't quite match up to the music.

My Favorite song on the album is Hate Letter. It begins very light-heartedly, complete with the sound of birds singing. Then goes to the words "probly won't miss you". The song is about a break up, apparently of a serious, long term relationship that somehow wasn't very significant.

That's pretty much the tone of the whole CD, with very little exception. The most up-beat song is probably Splatter Splatter, which is about the enjoyment of Slasher Movies, which it's possible they're actually mocking, but it's hard to tell.

Overall, nice and mellow, with interesting lyrics that are ironic, if not witty.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing- if you give it a chance, October 13, 2002

Thornhill isn't something that you can listen to once and appreciate. In that aspect, it's very much like Wood. Every Fruvous album is different, and it takes a while to shed your preconceived notions of what you wanted it to be and to accept what it is.

I hated Thornhill the first time I listened to it, but I liked it a little the second time. The third time I grew rather fond of it, and by the fourth time I was belting out lyrics. It was my car tunes for several months. If you're looking for fun tunes- listen to 'b' or 'c'- but Thornhill is thoughtful, wistful, romantic, political- all wrapped up in four part harmonies and general fruvousness. Out of all of the songs, I think, the only one I don't particularly like is When She Talks.

Take my advice- listen to it a lot before you make up your opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different Moxy is still good -- it's still Moxy!, December 19, 2000

Everyone'll say this album is more serious than "actual" Moxy, but, people may forget that the band does have a serious side. The lads have taken 12 tracks of mellow and lyrical fun that may sound more serious, but are still great songs. Just think of it like this -- every other Moxy album contains its share of wacky, zayny, upbeat songs and the one or two mellow, reflective ones. This album contains its sahre of mellow reflective tunes, with some zayny mixed in. Besides -- you can't beat My Poor Generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars very cool album!!!!!!, March 29, 2000
By
This review is from: Thornhill (Audio CD)
I personally love thornhill. Most people seem to have given it a bad review, but i just think that you're comparing to much to the other albums(bargainville, wood) the songs earthquakes, my poor generation, and hate letter are the best, followed by sad girl, i will hold on , and the amazing bass vocals of murray in independace day. It's definatly a turning point for fruvous, but they are going off in a good direction!

5.0 out of 5 stars Permanently in my CD changer, February 5, 2000

This review is from: Thornhill (Audio CD)
A non-stop joy ride from the ever-growing Moxy Fruvous. An excellent CD from beginning to end. We hear a more serious, poetic side of Fruvous through the entire album. Highlights are, I Will Hold On, a love song that will make you cry; the fabulous, Earthquakes, about life and God; Independence Day, another heart wrencher a la Murray Foster; and the beautiful, If Only You Knew, what it feels like to miss someone you love. You will not be disappointed with this outstanding CD.
