I bought these about six weeks ago and went ahead and ordered my regular size without being able to try on a pair. I was considering the Red Wings that are somewhat comparable but much more expensive. I decided to take a gamble on these because I wanted a good durable boot that was made in the U.S.A. These are very beautiful boots if you like the style. They look better than the pictures in fact. Very heavy duty etc. I carefully cut off the little U.S.A. flag tags (see photos) with an exacto knife... it's not hard. I wanted boots made in the U.S.A. but don't need to advertise the fact on both feet. Just my taste and if you like the flags by all means leave them on. Very nice vibram soles and can be resoled. The boots took a little bit of breaking in and may run a little large. At first they rubbed my heel a bit but now after a little breaking in they fit perfectly and don't rub. I do wear a thick pair of cotton socks with them but you'd probably want to do this anyway. It's possible I could have ordered a size smaller. Although I like the fit of the pair I have so it would be a close call. They definitely run a bit bigger than the marked size but not a full half-size larger like Red Wings. More like 1/4 size larger. Don't be put off by that though. Order your regular size and you will get slightly larger fit and will probably want to wear with thick socks after a break-in period. If you order down by half a size then the boots will probably be a bit tight, but most likely will break in to your comfort. I am very happy with my purchase and am proud to support quality U.S. products.

July 28, 2012 update: Still very happy with these boots. A couple of notes. They are good for walking around town on concrete, and are still very comfortable after more than a year. The only negative I have noticed is that the "drill vamp" lining in the toe area wears through pretty quickly. It might be better to have no lining (which is the result of it wearing through anyway) if a leather lining is not possible at this price point. I won't deduct any stars because I still love these boots. You won't see many other people around wearing these boots. They definitely have an old-school "On the Waterfront" look to them. The white soles give a great grip on concrete and other smooth hard surfaces. They seem to wear somewhat quickly compared to dark vibram soles, though I think this is normal and to be expected. I will probably look at having them resoled in another year or so, wearing them about two or three days a week.

First of all, I love these boots. I've always admired Red Wings, but their price point put me off. When I had heard about these boots from various blogs (getting glowing reviews, mind you), I had to check them out. Made in USA, Vibram sole, Goodyear welt, American heritage workwear blahblahblah, all for a $130? Sounds great to me. On getting the boots in Brown Crazy Horse, I loved them. The quality checked out, they looked great, everything.

HOWEVER!

I bought them in 8.5 EE (wide feet, what's good?), and the insoles seemed to have a bit of a problem staying flat against the bottom of the boot. They would pop up in the middle of the boot, making it feel a little bit weird. I solved that problem by cutting down some of the excess insole that was causing the problem, and that was that. After about a weeklong break-in period, I noticed that the outside side of the insole in the left boot was a little bumped up, which caused some discomfort after a day of wear. This was only on the left boot, mind you. I switched out the insoles with some that I grabbed out of a pair of Timberland hiking boots, and everything feels great now. I'm not sure if this was an issue with my particular pair or if it's common in all 8.5 EE, but everything is fine now.

That's only the bad, though. Here's the good:

The boots look great. They're tough, pretty damn water resistant (a couple hours in steady rain will leak through a bit), and they're starting to look good with wear. The sole is hard wearing as you'd expect from Vibram, and as a substitute for higher priced Red Wings or other similarly styled workboots, I can't help but recommend these. I'm looking forward to wearing these hard for a number of years and getting them resoled, only to wear them in again. Let's be honest here: I'm wearing these mostly on the street for stuff like getting coffee, going to class, taking pictures (all you bloggers know what's up), and these boots are MORE than adequate for these tasks. Long story short, BUY THESE BOOTS!

At the age of 17 I got my first job with the AH Weinbrenner Shoe Co, in my home town of Marshfield, WI. It was a summer job and, as I recall I was only allowed to work 30 hr / week, being a minor. I earned $0.85 /hr. This was back in 1957. A couple of years later, the factory in Marshfield closed as the company fell upon hard times. My life went in other directions and I essentially forgot the experience. Then, a few weeks ago I stumbled upon the brand name "Thorogood" while on Amazon, and realized that my old employer was back in business, and had been for some time..the employees having bought out the original company. Back in the day I had only seen a small part of the shoe making process; my job that summer was to glue fabric pads onto the sole inner-liners. I remember the smell of the glue, the sight of stacks and stacks of glued-up inner-liners and the boasting of my permanent employee companions that they were paid for piece-work while I had to be content with a straight hourly wage.

With my final paycheck that summer, I bought a pair of Thorogood work boots (as seconds) from the company store. I think I paid something like $12 or so, more than a full day's wage.

The boots I bought then were a box toe style and of tan color, these are moc toe and black. It's not as if I really need work boots of this quality at this point in my life, but hey, I just couldn't resist. Any yes, I'm keeping the little flags on them.

I was amazed how different this boots feel compared to my Red Wing Moc Toe boots. This is very comfortable even if worn for the first time. Leather is soft, smells good, amazing color combination, and requires little break in... Im on my third day wearing the boots but it feels broken in already except for some part over the toe area.

Due to the softer leather compared to Red Wing, I suspect that this would somehow cause deformity of the shoe shape in the future. The laces are not that great because they fray easily.

Would I still buy Red Wing after I purchased Thorogood? ... my answer is YES! ... this may be a great product, but the top quality product of Red Wing is still number 1 on my list...

Buy half size smaller as this runs 1/2 size big. I usually wear US10.5 in sneakers, the size 10 thorogood fits perfect!

It is made from quality materials and is well put together however these boots are going to need a good bit of breaking in. I wear a size 9 with a somewhat narrow foot and heeded the advice about ordering a half size down. From my heel to the ball of my big toe is a perfect fit as it lines up with the contour of the inner sole. But the toe box, specifically the length of it, is way too long. I probably have 3-4 to one inch to spare. Furthermore the boots are very tight, which may lessen somewhat as I break them in. After reading the other reviews and trying them on myself, I'm convinced that Thorogood designs these boots for men with feet like ocean liners. Long and narrow.

As everyone says this is a very comfortable boot. To help with sizing I wear a 12 in New Balance and Vans sneakers, and a 11.5 in Ariat boots. I got the 11.5 Thorogoods and they fit perfect.

This brand is worth what you would pay for Chipewa or Redwing ! This is my third pair and I am sure when the rest of you catch on to the quality , comfort and price they will go up in price!or the worst could happen like Fry boots and Wolverine be made in other counties that don't have the same pride in workmanship and still charge the same price.

These boots are AWESOME. I'm in the construction industry and I needed something more substantial than the multiple pairs of nikes I had gone through in the last 5 years.
Sizing was a bit difficult as I couldn't just walk in somewhere and try a pair on. I usually wear a size 11.5 in nikes and vans and litterally everything. I heeded advice of people and ordered a size 11. Got them and they were TOO BIG. Sent them back and got a 10 which was tight to say the least. I ordered a size 10.5 and kept the 10 to compare. I ended up keeping the 10.5 wide, since I have wide feet they felt like they fit perfectly at the time. . When I measured my foot at a shoe store It read I had 10 wide foot. It was between 10 and 10.5 so they say to just size up to 10.5.

Now 5 days later after wearing these boots at work working on baseboard and trim they have stretched a little bit. More than i thought actually and now I realize I should have kept the 10's and let the break in period stretch them out. Don't get me wrong they are still extremely comfortable and I will deff buy another pair in a few years when these wear out. (gonna be a while haha) all in all these are sweet boots and they look great. I just wish I knew they would stretch a little bit...

I gave this rating because to me, the 2" E" size seemed narow on my left foot. The boot digs a bit into my little toe. The quality of the workmanship of this boot is unserpassed!

I read nothing but great things about these boots so I was very excited to receive them. I've worn them now for about 1 week and they have become very painful. As I walk and the toe flexes, the seam on the top of the boot pushes down into my toe. I've tried to ignore it for a few days, thinking it may be part of the break in process but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. This has actually caused a bruise on my big toe. I'm not sure if this is a construction issue with these boots or this one particular boot. Possibly it is just how I walk and it's not the boots at all, not sure. I am very disappointed to be returning these boots, aside from the issue I have described they have been great, very well built and the attention to detail by the manufacturer is clear.
