5.0 out of 5 stars Give it a fair listen!
If you can find this version of "For those about to rock" you're in good company, because the brownish gold cover is identical to the copy on vinyl that I own, which means it's among the initial pressings.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Weak Follow-Up
Although this album is a disappontment coming on the heels of the monolithic album Back In Black (one of the best ever, by any band), we shouldn't have really expected anything else. I mean, how can you improve on perfection? That said, this album's weaknesses (and few strengths) need to be addressed.

The title track is the best song on here by far, the intro is...

If you can find this version of "For those about to rock" you're in good company, because the brownish gold cover is identical to the copy on vinyl that I own, which means it's among the initial pressings.

With Back in Black, AC/DC raised the bar so high that no one could top it, not even themselves. The only way you're not going to like For Those About to Rock is if you compare it to Back in Black, which is understandable, but for me personally I enjoy the album to the same extent as Back In Black.

The title track was inspired by a the saying "For those about to die, we salute you" and the band simply changed a word. The song features cannon noises which build up for a grand finale. It is a concert staple, and justifiably so, but there's plenty more noteworthy tunes, among them are the verse-riff tandem of "Inject the venom", the relentless rocking of "Snowballed", "Night of the long knives" had a Back in Black-style groove, "Breaking the rules" is an anthemic, semi-bounce track. I recommend "For those about to Rock" wholeheartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars AC/DC Broadens Their Horizons, July 31, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Of course, following up 1980's record breaking "Back in Black" would be quite difficult, whether you make that assumption by sales or by quality. But leave it to AC/DC to carry on the true tradition of classic rock-n-rollers, with 1981's "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)." Here, the band explores all of their expected territory with epic rock anthems (the classic title track) and the predictably fashioned wine, women, and song scores ('Let's Get it Up,' 'Put the Finger on You'). But in a stunning yet well balanced manner, AC/DC brings listeners to a world on the streets, taking elements of frustration (the excellent 'Spellbound'), distrust (superbly crafted 'Night of the Long Knives') and rebellion ('Breaking the Rules'). 'COD' is classic AC/DC all the way, while the marvelous rockers 'Evil Walks' and 'Snowballed' seem to contradict the quintet's classic subject matter. Lead vocalist Brian Johnson's lyricism and bellows give the album its broad feel, while the guitar playing of Angus & Malcolm Young lead the rhythm section of Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd. Here in its remastered form, "For Those About to Rock" is one of AC/DC's peak accomplishments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yeah...It's Not "Back In Black"!, July 24, 2000
I think that the main reason that this album is not looked at as a great AC/DC album is because people will not stop comparing it to Back In Black.

Yes, Back In Black is one of the best rock albums ever recorded. Yes, Back In Black is by far AC/DC's best album ever.

BUT....what you need to realize is that EVERY ALBUM AIN"T GONNA BE BACK IN BLACK! When a band has an extremly sucessful album like Back In Black, there is always an enormus amount of pressure to make the follow-up album just as good or better. And most always, it is not.

With this album, however, I think that the band put together a solid ten-course rock n roll feast. The title song is one of their best, the cannons rule! Also Snowballed, COD and Evil Walks are good songs.

So if you give this album the fair chance it deserves and listen to it without expecting Back In Black, you will like it, I PROMISE!

it seems alot of ppl say that this album isnt the best performance by any of the band members. on the contrary, i think this is ac/dc at the peak of their talents. the album is a bit slower than back in black, but i actualy prefer FTATR over black! the title track is a great rocker, probably the only popular one off the album. i put the finger on you and lets get it up are the only tracks i dont care much for, soemtimes ill skip them. inject the venom is my favorite song, its great, faster paced and catchy. from here on out the album stays pretty steady, no bad songs. so dotn let people tell you this is so much worse than back in black, this is a great album

5.0 out of 5 stars Like it better than Back in Black, November 8, 2004

I have listened to Back in Black so many times for so long that for a while it was the only AC/DC I listened to. One day I decided to pick up this album while shopping at Target and was blown away. I am not really a fan of AC/DC and just have Back in Black because it's one of those classic rock albums that you have to have in the collection. With this purchase though, I'm looking at picking up Highway to Hell and a lot of their older stuff. If you're even a casual fan of AC/DC and have only heard back in black, do yourself a favor and check it out. I guarantee you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite AC/DC albums (Brian Johnson era), February 2, 2008
This review is from: For Those About to Rock We Salute You (Dlx) (Audio CD)
"For those about to Rock" might not be a fan favorite (such as Back in Black) but I think it acutally a better album. I loved "Back in Black" when I first heard it, but it I grew bored of it over time. Now I am only basing this comparison on the fact that I played "Back in Black" to death, yet I have had this album and back in black for the same time, and I have not grown tired of this. I love the title track, its got Heavy Metal written all over it. The whole album has a little less of a rock flavor to it, and it seems a bit more raw then "Back in Black" If you are a die-hard AC/DC fan, you probely all ready have this in your collection. I am not sure if some fans love it as much as I do, but to all the fans who are just starting to discover AC/DC (and I am sure that you started with "Black in Black") I recommend this album. Once again, its a bit of a change from "Back in Black" (its more on the lines of the under-rated but very good "Flick of The Switch") Hopefully you will love the sheer power and energy (and heaviness) of the album as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A seriously overlooked album, February 10, 2006
This review is from: For Those About to Rock We Salute You (Dlx) (Audio CD)
FTATR is, with no question in my mind, the most criminally overlooked album from AC/DC. Besides the monsterous title track, THE quintessential AC/DC song, nothing else on here got the air time or popularity. The album was always panned as a weak follow-up to Back In Black, which in reality isn't the least bit true... it's actually a MUCH stronger album then it's predesessor.

The band drops the sugary, AOR style trappings and over the top sexual prefrances of Back In Black and goes for a straight ahead heavy rock style album. It's much less commercial and heavier, and the band definatly improved their skills, as the riffs are much craftier and sharper. The finest moments would have to be the title track, "Lets Get It Up", "Snowballed", "Evil Walks", "Night of the Long Knives" and the most underrated AC/DC song ever, "Spellbound". The production is big and loud without sounding overpolished or radio-freindly. Angus belts out some of his best leads on this, he is one of the greatest guitarists on earth and has always amazed fans, as with every AC/DC album. But with THIS, he is secured as one of the gods. FTATR is AC/DC heard at it's heaviest, this is 80's metal at it's nastiest.

"Spellbound" has to be heard to be belived>

"For Those About to Rock" (10*10)

"I put the Finger on You" (8*10)

"Lets Get It Up" (10*10)

"Inject the Venom" (8*10)

"Snowballed" (10*10)

"Evil Walks" (9*10)

"C.O.D." (9*10)

"Breaking the Rules" (7*10)

"Night of the Long Knives" (9*10)

"Spellbound" (100*10)

This album might only contain the one well known track (title Track) but anybody who gives the album a listen and enjoys hard rock, then this album will deliver! You will hear a few tunes that will get you rockin and movin, and a few you will be singing the next day!
