Praise for For Those About to Rock:

“Equal parts career guide and history lesson, For Those About to Rock tells not only how to get where you’re going, but where it all came from in the first place.”
The Globe and Mail

“… Enormously readable … filled with first-person insights and useful information and peppered with the kind of trivia that appeals to even the nonmusical.”
The Gazette

“This is an extraordinarily entertaining volume for kids of all ages….”
Edmonton Journal

“One of ‘two books every Canadian musician must read.’”
–Long and McQuade

About the Author

Dave Bidini’s first book, published in 1998, was the popular and critically acclaimed On a Cold Road, about what it’s like to tour Canada in a rock ’n’ roll band. He has since written several more books, including Tropic of Hockey (2001) and Baseballissimo (2004). When he is not writing or traveling the world, Bidini is rhythm guitarist for the Rheostatics. The band has released ten albums to date, including Music Inspired by the Group of Seven, the soundtrack to the film Whale Music, which yielded the hit song “Claire,” and The Story of Harmelodia, a children’s album. He also starred in the Gemini Award-winning film The Hockey Nomad. For Those About to Rock was his first book for young adults. This is his second. Dave Bidini lives with his wife and two children in Toronto.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick, interesting, and relevant read, November 3, 2007
This review is from: For Those About to Write: How I Learned to Love Books and Why I Had to Write Them (Paperback)
Very strongly recommended for both school and community library collections, "For Those About To Write: How I Learned to Love Books And Why I Had To Write Them" is the personal story of rock musician and sports enthusiast Dave Bidini's efforts as a writer whose first book, 'On a Cold Road' was published in 1998 and was about what it was like to tour Canada as part of a popular rock 'n' roll band called the 'Rheostatics'. Dave went on to write more books including 'Trop of Hockey' (2001) and 'Baseballissimo' (2004). Dave's anecdotal history of himself as a reader and a writer will admirably serve to introduce children ages 10 and older to what it is like to be a writer, how they can become writers themselves, and the values writing has both as a pastime and as a profession. Although specifically written to interest young readers in the world of writing and publishing, "For Those About To Write" will also prove to be a quick, interesting, and relevant read for adults of all ages who are themselves considering the writing of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great "follow up" to "For Those About to Rock.", November 28, 2007
This review is from: For Those About to Write: How I Learned to Love Books and Why I Had to Write Them (Paperback)
This is Dave Bidni's second book for young adults. His first, "For Those About to Rock," was a primer on the music industry for those who think, or hope, that rock and roll stardom, or frustration, may be in their future. I highly recommend that book as well as "For Those About to Write," which is it's literary bookend.

The book is very well written, as entertaining as it is informative. Using his own experiences as a writer as a backdrop to introducing the literary world works wonderfully.

Writers and potential writer of all ages will enjoy this book. To her delight, I have read the book aloud to my eight year old daughter. She didn't know who F. Scott Fitzgerald was before, but she does now. She also knows who Dave Bidini is, and so should you.
