I'm flabbergasted that Dover Books didn't see fit to print this history of paper dolls in color. Even in 1981 they could have done that; how expensive could it have been? Chock full of gorgeously illustrated antique paper dolls with stunning period costumes, the entire book is printed in dull, murky, smudged tones of black and gray so that the reader gets NOTHING of the effect of these lovely clothes from circa 1850-1900 -- one could only guess and use their imgination of the color array of the dresses. Any little girl 160 years ago would have been thrilled to pieces receiving such a gift of these representative documents of paper dolls, from some doting Auntie or whomever, but we can't even begin to picture the color schemes used in illustrating the costumes or even the complexions (hair, skin tones) of the dolls. It really seems very nearly a crime. Is this the fault of the author or the publisher?
