5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing album!, October 12, 2008

I am 23 and like older music. I was at an antique store with my mom one day and I saw this sitting there. The cover reminded me of hippy music, so I bought it. I almost sold it because I thought it was another album I had played (which I did not like very much.) So I played it to make sure and it blew me away. The music is so amazing. It kind of reminds me of Dr. Hook and Bread. All the members of the band can do what they do better than most I have heard. My favorite song if I had to pick one would be Red Hot Women And Ice Cold Beer. It is so funny. My grandfather told me he remembered that song when I told him the name. This album will probably catch most people who have never heard them off guard. The songs on the album are

1. I Can Heal You

2. High Roller

3. Peggy Sue

4. (Just ) Another Night In Reno

5. It Never Hurts To Be Nice To Somebody

6. Love Has Strange Ways

7. Hold On It's Coming

8. By And By When I Need You

9. Home Grown

10. Red Hot Women And Ice Cold Beer

3.0 out of 5 stars High Rollers, February 12, 2012

The New Riders released their ninth album (not counting The Best Of) in early 1977 and it was their third and final album to be produced by Bob Johnston. This was the first album to feature Stephen Love and would be drummer Spencer Dryden's last as he became the band's manager. This would also mark the only N.R.P.S. album during John Dawson's time to not feature a song written by him. The album opens with with a cover song sung by Stephen called I Can Heal You and is okay but no great shakes. Next is another cover called High Rollers sung by David. This one is better written about the excesses of show business ("and you live on religion and pills/in a house in the Hollywood Hills/cops like to bust us/the hippies don't trust us..."). Next up is a cover of the Buddy Holly song Peggy Sue which, unfortunately, falls flat. Stephen's Just) Another Night in Reno is okay and is actually one of the better songs on here. The first half ends with It Never Hurts to Be Nice to Somebody which has the same riff used in She's Gonna Win Your Heart (which was another cover that later appeared on Bobby and The Midnights' Where The Beat Meets The Street). Love Has Strange Ways is okay but nothing special. The band then turns in a cover of Country Joe's Hold On It's Coming but it's also a little flat. Stephen's By and By When I Need You is, once again, okay but nothing special, as is Buddy's Home Grown and an average cover of Red Hot Women And Ice Cold Beer. This album isn't bad but it really isn't anything special either in my opinion but your mileage may vary. For me, it's my least favorite by the Riders.
