Chantel Jolie's debut novel, In Those Jeans, was one jaw-dropping moment after another. The beautiful Chanel Martinez was not your average hit-em up chick. Sure, she wanted and needed someone to take care of her, but she was not above going out and making it rain money on her own.
Desperate times called for desperate measures as we opened up this story to find Chanel being dumped by her man before he sponsored a much needed trip to Brazil. That did not stop her though. She financed her own trip and upon her return to Hot-Lanta, with no where to go, Chanel did what she did best; hustled to survive. Just as times got a little rougher for her, in stepped Samuel; a fine Jamaican brother with a here one moment, gone the next accent. Chanel knew she had a keeper. But in order to keep him, she had to keep one life-shattering secret to herself. Little did she know, Samuel had a devastating secret of his own. Chantel Jolie has the makings of an awesome street-lit writer. In Those Jeans was consistent, smooth flowing, exciting, and everything made sense. Well almost everything. There were a few grammatical issues and I was not fond of the typesetting. Still, the plot was tight, the characters were believable, and the material was fresh. I recommend In Those Jeans to urban fiction/street-lit fans. Darnetta Frazier APOOO BookClub

"It is what it is.",

IN THOSE JEANS is about Chanel Martinez and her quest to find the man of her dreams. The problem is Chanel comes with her own set of issues and problems. In order to live the glamorous life, she has resorted to credit card scams, stripping in clubs and lying. In the end, she may not get everything she wants.
After a trip to Brazil, she decides to lay low in Atlanta. But with only a couple hundred dollars in her pocket, and the fact that her sugar daddy changes his number, she goes back to doing what she knows best - stripping. Of course drama follows Chanel, because of a fight her first night at the strip club, she befriends another stripper. It is through this acquaintance she meets Samuel, a Jamaican who has a few secrets of his own. Samuel seems to be the man of Chanel's dreams: money, cars and plenty of sex. However, when personal tragedies abound for Chanel, she realizes she doesn't truly know Samuel and he doesn't know Chanel. Being caught up in their situation, Chanel will find more drama than she can imagine, some even deadly. IN THOSE JEANS is a page-turner for those motivated by exaggerated drama and antics. There were a multitude of characters most of whom were one-dimensional. Nevertheless, Chanel's character was more fleshed out than most of the others. The secret of her character was easily discerned from the first couple of pages of the story, so there was no suspense for me. There were plenty of racy scenes and over-the-top drama for urban fiction lovers. However, I found the ending disappointing because it left several questions unanswered and seemed rushed, but Jolie seems to have set the stage for a sequel. A Realistic Storyline,
This review is from: In Those Jeans (Paperback)
Have you ever seen someone who appeared to have it all? Looks, body, and the latest fashions? That describes Chanel Martinez to the tee. Chanel was a 5'9" bombshell with a body to die for and every man's fantasy plus more. Chanel was used to credit card scams and money being at her disposal. But when circumstances changed her financial situation, Chanel had to do whatever it took to maintain her lifestyle and keep her secret.
Things seem to change when Chanel meets Samuel. This successful Jamaican businessman came right on time for Chanel. Samuel was smooth, a perfect gentlemen, and money was never an issue for him. But a relationship cannot be made up on lies and dishonesty. When Samuel is suddenly arrested, secrets are revealed that could lead to deadly consequences. But does Samuel have a secret of his own? In Those Jeans was an excellent read, it tackled a variety of issues but yet at the same time maintained a realistic storyline. I think the author did an excellent job. You can never trust someone no matter how long or short the time period is. This book held my attention from beginning to end. It dealt with taboo topics that you rarely see in today's novels. Like the old saying goes "What's done in the dark shall come out in the light." That was definitely the main theme throughout In Those Jeans. Reviewed By Kristin for Urban Reviews

I thought this novel was "Convict Candy" meets Chanel "In Those Jeans". It was an okay read 4 me..I knew what was up when the mention of those "hands" was said a lil 2 much. Nothing about this book gave me a WOW!!...It was jus Okay 4 me as Randy Jackson would say.
Secrets no matter what the situation can be a mess, it's jus that some need 2 be told or pain and or death follows. Funny things is I believe Samuel still wants Chanel...am I right?

While I know I'm late with this review (speaking of the date) I still had to give one.
This book was outstanding! Chanel is every guy's fantasy, she's working with the looks, phat ass, body, and street smarts but she's addicted to one thing and will do anything to get it, money! But with all the money Chanel still isn't satisfied b/c she's hiding a terrible secret, a secret so explosive it will/can change her life forever if revealed. Only one persons knows and that person isn't the guy she married. Everyone isn't always who they proclaim to be...

Chantel Marinez is on the look out for a great guy who will love and cherish her till death do they part. But her choice of men better have plenty of moolah to keep Chantel living the glamorous life she so shamelessly loves. After getting caught in a scam Chantel decides to check out Atlanta only thing is she doesn't know anyone there. But it doesn't take long for this sexy kitten to shake her thang and do what she has to do to make a living.
While there she meets Samuel, her kind of man...financially. The relationship "blossoms" and the two seem to be falling head over heals. But both choose not to reveal their closely guarded secrets to each other. But of course, what you do in the dark will always come to light, and Chantel's is about to explode! The author kept the high drama going and was successfully able to incorporate a strong abusive undertone and an important friendship between the characters Chantel and Stacy. It's very important to have that friend who is non judgmental, and Ms. Jolie did a fine job here with these two characters. I do think that the author could have gave us a little more info on Stacy though. Enjoyable read! Locksie ARC Book Club Inc. |
