Romance and Adventure Combine in Fast-Paced Whodunit,
By
This review is from: One of Those Malibu Nights (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Adler takes an unusual step (for her) by making her main character a male. Mac Reilly is a ruggedly handsome private investigator to the stars with his own TV show and unkempt cottage on the famed Malibu beach.
Mac's sometimes girlfriend, sexy Sunny Alvarez, wants him to pop the question, but Mac likes his life just as it is. A woman's scream in the night, a diamond watch, a famed Hollywood star posing as a waitress in a French bistro, and a money-laundering scheme all combine to lead Mac and Sunny on a chase that uncovers buried bodies, frozen bodies, and a host of lovable dogs. With its tightly-knit plot, interesting characters, and short, snappy chapters, Adler is sounding more like James Patterson than the Adler of old. And she handles the change in tone very well. Readers will still enjoy her unparalleled use of local color as the characters travel from Malibu to Rome to Paris and beyond, and she definitely knows how to write a nice love story. For romance, suspense, and just an all-around good whodunit, Adler hits the jackpot with this one.

Wasn't worth finishing,
This review is from: One of Those Malibu Nights (Paperback)
This was the first novel of Adler's that I tried--it will be the last. I kept thinking I was reading a society page with the never ending descriptions of what the characters were wearing (and how expensive it all was). Too bad she didn't spend as much time on the plot/story. Also, didn't find the characters particularly interesting or likable, which made it quite easy to return the book unfinished to the library.

A Fun Pleasant Read,
By
This review is from: One of Those Malibu Nights (Hardcover)
I just finished reading EA's latest venture and I found it fast moving and just pleasant time spent. I enjoyed her characters, Mac and Sunny well, and even the 4-legged characters in this book of which there are several. Actually you could get into all of the characters in this book. EA spends enough time with each of them for you to get to know them. After some of the darker and heavier novels I've read lately this was just a refreshing change of pace. There is not a lot of profanity or gory details of murdered victims. Oh, yes there are a couple of dead bodies showing up and a good mystery along with some light romance. I even appreciated though there are love scenes between Mac and Sunny, again they are not detailed. Do we really always need details? As usual there is the lovely descriptions of food and scenery in various countries that Malibu Nights takes you to.
Elizabeth Adler seemed to take on a different style of writing in this book than is usual for her books but it seemed to work. Some may think it not her best writing but I found it quite enjoyable.

Malibu Mystery...,

This review is from: One of Those Malibu Nights (Hardcover)
This is the first Elizabeth Adler I've read, and it was a perfect vacation read. The characters were well-developed, the descriptions scenic, the plot mildly predicatable, but a well-wrapped ending.

I really enjoyed this book. In typical Adler style, it had lots of gorgeous locations, which she does a masterful job of describing to the reader. Looking forward to the next one.

This was a great book, as are all of Elizabeth Adler's books. They are really well written, and I don't feel like everyone of her books has the same type story. They are all very diffirent, which is what I like about them.

Elizabeth Adler produces another winner. Both this book and the new hard-cover sequel, "There's Something about St. Tropez," are great reads. Mac Riley is a sexy, fun PI and his quirky girlfriend, Sunny Alvarez, is a perfect match for him. I feel as if I know them both, and I can't wait for the next one in this series - I hope Elizabeth Adler will write another soon.

fast-paced whodunit,
This review is from: One of Those Malibu Nights (Hardcover)
Southern California private investigator Mac Reilly hosts the cold case mystery show "Mac Reilly's Malibu Mysteries"; he enjoys leading his audience on investigations of unsolved cases. Mac is walking his dog on the beach by his home Malibu Colony at night thinking about his lover Sunny Alvarez who left for Rome after they argued. When he hears a scream from a nearby home, Mac immediately races to the location to be of assistance. He arrives only to have a beautiful female point a gun at his face; a gun that goes off just missing him. Mac leaves before he is hurt as he knows this is one of these crazy nights.
Later he learns his accidental shooter is one of the zillion Ronald Perrin girlfriends. Perrin is an investment billionaire married to Hollywood actress Allie Ray, who plans to divorce her philandering spouse. Ironically, Ron hires Mac to find out who is following him and Allie hires Mac to find out who is stalking her. Following her appearance at Cannes, Allie vanishes changing Mac's surveillance cases to something more sinister. This fast-paced whodunit moves from California to Europe to Mexico and back to Malibu, as Elizabeth Adler, known for her overseas thrillers, provides an entertaining whodunit. Mac is fabulous as a PI turned reality host having a married couple as separate clients even though he knows that he could have some ethics issues if he has to testify in court at their divorce suit. Fans will relish this Hollywood polished Noir as ONE OF THESE MALIBU NIGHTS is a fun private investigation tale. Harriet Klausner |
