Editorial Reviews

Those Moments Before is cinematic small ensemble music, inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, Wong Kar-Wai's "Fallen Angels," a fabulous espresso-and-milk drink one finds in Barcelona, Henry Threadgill, and more. The accordion and brass-driven music is an infectious swirl of influences ranging from nuevo tango and soundtrack music to an Eastern European blow-out. With its vivacious energy, infectious melodies, innovative rhythms, and intriguing diversity, Ratliff has created a cosmopolitan café music for the post-millennial city. Ratliff is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who plays cornet, trumpet, trombone, accordion and more on this disc. Those Moments Before features some of the top players on the New York scene including Doug Wieselman (clarinet), Michael Attias and Beth Schenck (saxophones), Nate Radley (guitar), Sean Conly (bass), Take Toriyama (drums) and Wes Matthews (piano and B3). It was mixed by the Grammy Award-winners Good and Evil and mastered by Scott Hull at Masterdisk.

Format: Audio CD
Those Moments Before is an impressive soundscape reflecting the scenes of Ratliff's life. It is evoking how he treats the subjects as a melody, harmony, timbre, or as a rhythmic motif. The moments before, during and after are part of the wholeness of this collection of songs. Time evades us while listening to Ratliff's compositions while elements of the past and present are heard in his timeless work. A poignant moment in the collection is the introduction in the track "Veloce." The duo of Raliff's accordion and Wieselman's clarinet howl and cry until the alarming surprise of the next section, reminding us of how events can abruptly change without warning. Those Moments Before showcases Raliff's versatility as a composer and as an imaginative artist. Those Moments Before

Extraordinarily diverse musically, postmodern jazz extraordinaire. worth it for Funeral March and Pinhole Ghost alone. The multiinstrumented Edward Ratliff knows how to play and how to get the best supporting musicians. I don't much like a few hints of klezmerism (but then that's just me), but otherwise just wonderful. And sonically one of the best CDs I have ever heard. Subjectively top to bottom flat frequency response, warm, clear, fast. Soundstaging not very prominent, but that may be asking too much of a CD. Get it!
