4.0 out of 5 stars Those Who Hunt Elves Complete Collection, July 5, 2011

This review is from: Those Who Hunt Elves: Complete Collection (DVD)
Three people from modern day Japan are transported to a fantasy land full of elves and magic. They are Junpei the thick-headed karate expert, Airi the award winning actress and Ritsuko the schoolgirl with a heavy artillery fetish. Celcia the Elf elder falters in her attempt to send them home and the spell fragments are scattered througout the land, imprinted on the bodies of female elves. So in order to get home our heroes need to strip every elf they meet until all the fragments are found. Surprisingly this simple plot doesn't get boring or repetitive for the duration of the series. What makes this show so entertaining is the humour and in particular the constant bickering between Junpei and Celia. I bought this series because I wanted a fantasy comedy anime like the Slayers. While not as good I'd definitely recommend this to fans of the Slayers.

My one complaint is about the packaging. All 4 discs are housed in 1 giant disc holder as opposed to 4 separate holders.

Extras include clean opening and ending animation, production sketches, original title trailers and 6 Sentai Filworks trailers.

This review is from: Those Who Hunt Elves: Complete Collection (DVD)
At first i didn't know what to expect from a anime that calls itself "Those who Hunt Elves" originally i expect a story set in a modern world about a bunch of people that hunt elves. I was half right to say the least. And when a anime presents the words "Warning Naked Elves Ahead" i admit this anime got me even more puzzled as to what it was about. Naked elves? guns? school girls? a odd combo indeed. But a combo that works for the most part. While certantly this isn't no 90s anime classic that Slayers is. I'm supprised how much of a favourite "Those Who hunt elves" has become. The characters are not nearly developed enough other than the fact they whana get back to Japan. And we learn some basic stuff about the characters that let us know enough about them. The whole focus of the story is three people stripping elves for spell fragments. While it's a basic plot to say for it. The first half of the animeis really engading because you whana see what crazy stuff happens andwhere the story goes. And i give the anime alot of credit for this. Not alot of animes i watch drives the viewer to keep watching, even from a basic plot. But Those who hunt elves succeeds in this area. Butletsget more indepth now shall we?

STORY: Well what can i say? it's about three people from the modern world (Our World) that get transported to this fantasy world where just about anything can happen. Along with the three main cast this Type 74 Tank gets transported somehow also along with them. And this serves as not only as a plot device, but it also acts as the groups only way of transport across this fantasy world where elves and humans and other stuff exist. And so what happens when you bring modern firepower into a fantasy setting? well alot of bunch of crazy stuff. Basicly these three have to strip elves in the most humiliating way, (normaly by ripping the closes right off them) for these spell fragments, what thecast needs to get transported back to their own world. And thus the stripping always provides alot of gags and laughs from start to finish. Afterall how many animes have you watch where on basicly every episodes you see elves get stripped? And ofcourse none of the elves, or most of them are willing to strip themselves for these fragments which ended up on them when one of the characters "Celcia" chanted the spell wrong when trying to send the three main cast back. Celcia was also the main cause as to why Junpei, Ritsuko and Aria are in this world tobegin with.

All because of this stupid spell that for some reason transports items (and people in this case)from the Modern world into theirs. As to why a spell book containing this spell exists in the first place is never explained nor does it need to. As the whole plot is about lots ofelf stripping and other crazy stuff. Because of the story, it allows for alot of jokes and references to real life places and people which works supprisingly well in a anime. Sadly the second half of the story losses alot of momentum, and it feels like they extended the story just to make a 24 episode TV Series. This partly due to the fact that because of the way something happens towards the end of the first half it completely makes it so they have keep searching for more spell fragments and it somewhat makes you feel that the first half was a waste. But it doesnt ruin the story, it's not that the second half of the anime is bad story wise, it's just that the first half is better. If you've ever watched Slayers then you can get a good idea what to expect with the story as the anime doesn't take itself too seriously for the most part, which makes it a enjoyable experience.

ANIMATION & Art Design: Supprisingly good actually, which was another thing that supprised me. For a anime that came out in 1996 the animation and the picuture quality is pretty good. The picture is nice and sharp, and the animation holds up pretty well. While they isn't any massive epic battles, the facial animations are animated well. And it doesn't use the old method of still images with voices in the background for any of the busy scenes. So i think alot of work and time was spent making this anime. And im personally a fan of the older art style that this kind of anime uses much like Slayers or Tench Muyo, so for a 90s anime fan like myself those who hunt elves is great in that regard. They are also a few moments i replayed a few times just because the animation on those parts were really fluid. So overall the animation is good. The Art design is decent too, although it isn't anything to be blown away by like the art design from Record of Lodoss War. Pretty much the visual stuff you see is pretty standard stuff from outfits to the backgrounds and so forth. The main character design isn't nothing to be amazed by neather. But they look unique and good. Oddly enough nearly all of the elves shown in the story are females. And they designs vary from tiny Flower Elves to Mermaid elves to your everday normal humanoidElves. Especially the flower elves look cute. The Overall Art Design is typical 90s fantasy anime looking, nothing bad, but if your me. (Someone who loves that kind of look) then you'll enjoy the overall theme of the show and the look of it.

Music & Sound: No complaints here. The dub is quitegood. With pretty much all of the original scripted intact. I was supprised yet again with the show, regarding theamount of searing it has. Which i didn't expect. Nothingvulgue like, but they say alot of rude stuff. But it complements the humour so it doesn't feel out of place or forced. Annoyingly one of the main characters who is voiced by Jessica Calvello gets replaced by a differen't person half way through the show, which annoyed me because he first voice is crazy and fun. And Jessica Calvellodoes a much better job at the role then Shelley Calene-Black does atvoicing the character. Shelleys performance on the character comes out as flat and less intresting for the character than Calvello's performance did. But its not a bad swap. It's just that Calvello doesn't bring the same energy to the character. The opening song "Angel Blue" is decent for a opening song also, and its one of the few animes openings i watch to listen to the song with. The voice acting on the elves and the other supporing characters is good. With my favourites being the flower elves again. Some of their voices are funny to listen toand arewell casted

The music that players in the show is also fitting for this anime, with no complaints in this area. None of the songs are standouts that make me want to buy the soundtrack, but the music works with some variants of the opening song being used as background music for some of the skirmish fights in the story.

FINAL SAY: Without a doubt Those who hunt elves has a charm that makes it not hard to recommend. Its fun and enjoyable and never takes it self too serious for the most part. And if it did then that charm would be lost. It's easy to see this as another one of them 90s fantasy animes. But its well worth watching if not for the story but for the crazy humour. It was a blast watching it and i laughed countless times on the jokes and puns and arkward moments with the elf stripping. A few of the episodes felt a letdown. But what more do you want from a anime that is about stripping elves? it's odd sure, but its awesome and well worth owning.

Story = 7.5
Animation = 8.2
Art = 7.5
Music = 7.5
VoiceWork = 8.9
