Priceless Collection of Stories,
By EJR "Ed" (Ann Arbor, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Those Who Stay (Hardcover)
For me this is a priceless collection of stories from a former Wolverine player. Gives you a great feel for the Michigan program under Bo Schembechler during the period of the 10 year war verus Woody Hayes in the mid 1970s. On top of that, is a remarkable tale of a walk on who eventually became a starter for the #1 ranked team in the country and who set a Rose Bowl record for longest touchdown reception. Who needs "Rudy"? Michigan has "Curt", and this is a MUCH better story. I grew up in Ann Arbor in the 1970s and followed the teams Curt played on it. This book brought back a lot of childhood memories for me. Very easy read format. It is a collection of short (a couple of pages each) stories so it is easy to pick up for a few minutes here or there, you don't need to have large blocks of time. I hope they make a movie based on the book. Great read if you are a Michigan fan, or even just a fan of the college game. GO BLUE!

This was such a great read. Anyone who has ever chased a dream can relate to it. I could not put it down and read it all in a day! Great insight into some of the inner workings of one, if not THE, greatest college football programs ever from a players perspective. I highly recommend this to fans of the University of Michigan, college football in general and anyone who was determined to accomplish a goal.

Awesome stories from someone who experienced Bo first hand.,
This review is from: Those Who Stay (Paperback)
What a great book. Wonderfully descriptive story from an actual student athlete. This book is different because of this very fact. There are lots of books about the Wolverines or Bo. But none of them are from an actual player. Would you trust an opinion and rememberances from someone who was actually there or someone who does research and maybe never even played football or any organized sport.
Any true Wolverine fan or any true college football fan would appreciate this book.

Inspiration for All Ages,
This review is from: Those Who Stay (Paperback)
Fantastic book that everyone can relate to about hope and dreams and how you can make it all come true in America.
This would make a great Christmas present for kids, teens and grownups looking for a role model. Very good read; makes you feel like you are inside this true story, living it yourself.

Reading typically puts me to sleep, but not this time. The last time I read a book that kept me reading on a work night was The Firm (John Grisham) 17 years ago.
Curt's story is unbelievable, heartfelt and inspiring. I am motivated to be a better person by "Those Who Stay" and Curt's life. This is not just a Rudy story. Or a football story. It is a story about life and how to live it, and this would be a better world if there were more Curt Stephenson's.

I was born and raised 10 miles from the Big House and I love Michigan football. As a general interest story, this book was okay, but the editing was TERRIBLE (let's just go ahead and say:NON-EXISTENT). There were frequent misspellings, sentence mistakes and other "details" that should have been caught and corrected. The book does not have any real drama, nor suspense as one reads to the conclusion. One aspect I picked up is this book may have been a Rich Rod backlash. The author is obviously an alumnus who believes the Wolverines should be led by a "Michigan-man". That may well be true, but the book itself is very disappointing. If you like good writing, GOOD EDITING or if you like a "page-turner", DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

This was a really fun and interesting book for me to read. I came to Ann Arbor as a freshman, the same August that the author did. It was fun to read about his experiences as a walk on for the Wolverines. I admire his tenacity in achieving his dream of playing for Michigan. It was exciting to go inside the life of a football player at Michigan, because I was an avid fan (still am) and always in the stands cheering on my team. It was especially fun to relive the good ol days of Michigan being a major powerhouse in college football. As fans, we expected to win! And of course it is always enjoyable to read about the colorful personality that was Bo Schembechler. I gave this book four stars for one reason, and it has nothing to do with the story itself. It had numerous typographical errors, which I found odd considering this day and age of spell check. But those aside, it was really fun to read about someone else's personal memories of Michigan, and especially such a special story as Curt Stephenson's.
