Very touching. Slightly meandering, at least as read through subtitles (I am always suspicious that I am missing important nuance when reading subtitles instead of hearing the actual dialogue). All in all though a really thought provoking and poignant glimpse into the personal horror of the cultural revolution. Without work like this, the cultural revolution might ossify into the kind of history we discount simply because it is a monolithic act of evil in our past. I feel this is important to my own nascent understanding of a nation with which my own has already begun to become inextricably intertwined.

Though I am Gone tells the tale of a teacher, Bian Zhongyun who loses her life through the political violence during the Cultural Revolution.

Wang Jingyao chronicles his wife's death through many vivid photographs of the event. Through these photographs, along with archive footage and first hand reports, the viewer is given an extremely moving tale of the horrible violence during the era and the impact it has had on the survivors. This film is an extremely powerful portrait of the Cultural Revolution and succeeds in keeping alive the memory of the many victims of the era.

This is an important story. We are not taught in history that Bian Zhongyun was the first teacher beaten to death by her students during Mao's Cultural Revolution. We are not taught that many other teachers and school officials were murdered after her. This is an important story.
