Book Description

May 20, 1998
Two groundbreaking essays launch Archetypal Psychology in a new direction: toward the world. Hillman calls this "a depth psychology of extraversion"—a therapy beyond the consulting room and private relationships, opening the heart-felt conncection to the world.

To restore the heart's courage and its imaginative power, the soul of the world needs the same attention that we have been giving to the soul of persons. There is a soul quality to all things in the environment, whether "natural" or "manmade." These essays show how to regain, and live of, heart and soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful book full of heart, August 14, 2001
This review is from: The Thought of the Heart; [and] The Soul of the World (Paperback)
In this, one of Hillman's best books, he rewrites two talks as essays, both of which revisualize the literal blood pump in the chest as the metaphorical place where imagination begins and image connects consciousness and world.

To hear that world and the soul which animates it (for soul isn't just locked up in the head or body), we must dwell on its specifics. Here are some illustrative quotations:

My practice tells me I can no longer distinguish clearly between neurosis of self and neurosis of world, psychopathology of self and psychopathology of world. Moreover, it tells me that to place neurosis and psychopathology solely in personal reality is a delusional repression of what is actually, realistically, being experienced.

The world, because of its breakdown, is entering a new moment of consciousness: by drawing attention to itself by means of its symptoms, it is becoming aware of itself as a psychic reality.

Let us imagine the anima mundi [world soul] neither above the world encircling it as a divine and remote emanation of spirit, a world of powers, archetypes, and principles transcendent to things, nor within the material world as its unifying panpsychic life-principle. Rather let us imagine the anima mundi as that particular soul-spark, that seminal image, which offers itself through each thing in its visible form.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Thought of the Heart and the Soul of the World, June 3, 2009
This review is from: The Thought of the Heart; [and] The Soul of the World (Paperback)
The Thought of the Heart and the Soul of the World This is a very good book. It is a little difficult and slow to read. That helps to allow more time to assimilate what Mr. Hillman is writing. This was a required book for class but I am glad to have read it. It is very thought provoking. I agree with author's perspective.

The content of the book is fine but the author as a person is just disgusting.
