I was turned on to Vanishing Point through their second album
Tangled in Dream. They are a melodic progressive metal band similar to Vanden Plas and Nightingale and have a strong Dream Theater influence, though they are not quite as technically-focused. I was so impressed by this Australian band's second album that I had to hunt down their 1999 debut In Thought.
While In Thought is a good initial effort, it doesn't really showcase just how good Vanishing Point is. The whole album tends to be a bit monotonous. The songs, which are in a melodic progressive rock (leaning towards metal, but not quite there) vein are all very similar, and maintain an even pace and tempo throughout. They're good songs, but could benefit from some more exciting, faster paced moments. I should point out that the band definitely took care of that on their follow up album. While In Thought was initially disappointing, it has grown on me after a few listens. The band put out a decent debut album, but it is hard not to be critical when you are exposed to their better work first. I think it's similar to hearing Dream Theater's
Images & Words and then listening to
When Dream and Day Unite - it's a good album, but you know the next one is a whole lot better.
I'd recommend In Thought to anyone who has heard and enjoyed Vanishing Point's later releases. If you're new to the band I recommend picking up Tangled in Dream first. In Thought is a good album from an impressive band and definitely worth owning, but probably not the best one to start with.
Edition Notes: In Thought was reissued in 2009. The reissue features the bonus track "Inner Peace" and a pair of video clips.

I bought this CD becasue I listened to a MP3 fomr the Web somewhere, and thought it was excellent. Unfortunatelly that was the only good song on the CD that I liked - "In Company of Darkness", the rest of the CD is OK, but not great.
