Book Description

January 1, 1999
Thoughts of God is a thriller--the tale of two modern-day hunters, one a killer of innocent children, the other the vigilante who vows to take him down. Yet it is so much more. It sees into the future and dwells on the past. It reaches into the galaxies of the universe to recount otherworldly struggles for life and death. And it takes readers into the notebook of God, where questions--answerable and unanswerable--build to a violent, dizzying climax of earthly justice and cosmic vengeance...

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

First novelist Kanaly alternates a gruesome tale of two hunters, a serial killer of young girls pursued by a licensed vigilante, with vignettes of life on other planets, and God's diary entries considering the experiments he's set in motion and their implications for good and evil. While the concept of God's diary is interesting, the serial killer portions only offer a predictable thriller. A marginal purchase.

From Kirkus Reviews

Under the Vigilante Laws, rich crime victims can pay operatives to track down and arrest criminals that elude the police. So when 12-year-old Yvonne Stafford vanishes, grabbed by schizophrenic lowlife Arnie Watts, a serial abductor, rapist, and murderer of children, her grieving parents call in ex-General Dennison York and his team. But as the net closes, Arnie's ``voices'' alert him to the danger. Just as the police find Yvonne, barely alive, Arnie surprises electronics whiz Ronnie Bates in York's surveillance van, kills him, and disappears. Meantime, as a postscript to each chapter, various other civilizations throughout the universe live, die, and develop attitudes toward their gods. Observing these, God ponders His great experiment in implanting ``spiritual entities'' (souls) inside ``mechanisms'' (bodies), concluding that Evil may be an external force actively preventing the spiritual growth of the implanted entities. And mad, bad Arnie? Well, eventually he'll grab one victim too many, get his worldly comeuppance, and thence be banished to Hell. Kanaly writes a strong, vigorous prose, but throws suspense out of the window--we always know where Arnie is and how close his pursuers are; the remainder, featuring God as a dim-witted, sophomoric sociologist, won't wash with many readers. All in all, an oddball debut. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

The Official Line: Michael Kanaly is an author and artist living in Upstate New York. He writes to critical acclaim across a wide spectrum of genres. His work has been called 'provocative and original'...'relentless...impossible to ignore or forget.' Mr. Kanaly is currently at work on what will be his fifth novel, THE LONG ARMS: A Story of Early Humans.

The Unofficial Line: Once when I was a kid, maybe eleven or twelve years old, I finished a book and stared out the window at the little town where I grew up. It was late at night, as even then I had a tendency to stay up long after other people were in bed. The moon was shining on silent streets, no cars, no people...and I wondered, looking at the paperback in my hand: Who are the people writing these books? Where are they in the world? How do they do such a thing? Unspoken, of course...because it was much too outrageous a thought to have, even to one's self...was the idea that I might like to grow up to do that kind of work. And now, decades later, much to my surprise and delight, I became one of those people! It just doesn't get any better than that...

4.0 out of 5 stars Hindu Cosmology and Murder Thriller, October 9, 2001

JACKIE DELIENNE (Oceanside, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thoughts of God: A Novel (Paperback)
I found "Thoughts of God" to be well-crafted and engaging, with a unique form.

Unlike another reviewer who saw this novel as presenting components of Christian cosmology, I found the novel to follow more closely Hindu cosmology and the writings of Meher Baba.

Note that in the Hindu/MeherBaba view, the hell state, as well as heaven, is not forever; it's just another condition and then earthly life begins again in another incarnation. Compare the movie "Made in Heaven."

In any case a novel is not a book of theology or divine scripture. A novel tells a story, conveys emotion, maybe gives food for thought. This novel succeeded in those things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kanaly Strikes a Homer!, August 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Thoughts of God: A Novel (Paperback)
THOUGHTS OF GOD is one of the most brilliant and ambitious novels I've read in the last three years. This is no rehashing of typical ideas. It is a courageous, original investigation into why we are who we are, how we make choices, why some of us tend to loose our souls along the way. At the same time, it is an on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller. I couldn't put it down. The writing is masterful and the story not only is thought provoking, but it stays with you--urging you to think bigger, be bigger--love and live more fully. Keep writing, Michael Kanaly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Open Your Mind., December 2, 1999
This review is from: Thoughts of God: A Novel (Paperback)
I didn't know it would be an interesting book, nor did I expect to care so much about its characters. "Thoughts of God" is so much more than anyone would expect. Above all else, I think it was a comparison--our world with countless others, and bridging it all...God's thoughts. Read it with an open mind.
