Review

Ben Green was an expert story-teller, one of the best I have ever listened to, and having grown up around cowboys, I have listened to some of the great ones...I have seen him start telling a story to one or two people in a hotel lobby, and in a short time he would have a goodly crowd gathered around, listening. A master of the oral story-telling art, he simply transferred that knack to the written page. -- From the Foreword by Elmer Kelton

Ben K. Green was equally adept at roping a steer, riding a bronc and spinning a yarn. You will feel that you are sitting around his campfire eatin' a mess of good chuck and slapping your sides laughing at one of his longest adventures ever; rounding up a renegade herd of mustangs in Old Mexico, doing the least necessary to make them seem rideable and trail driving them a thousand miles almost single-handedly, hoping to be able to sell them at a time when money was very tight. Along the way, you will meet some assorted colorful characters and witness Ben at his horse-trading best. This is a gem of a story told with lots of humor and a west Texas drawl.

Ben K. Green was a cowboy who could spin a yarn as well as ride a horse or rope a steer. In this Wild West Adventure, young Ben sets off at the end of the Great Depression to Mexico to try to find an elusive band of mustangs. Along the way he meets some colorful characters, gathers quite a herd of horses and mules, and has to figure out how to get them back home and sell them to make the one-year journey worthwhile. A wonderful adventure, chock-full of humor, told with a west Texas drawl. You will feel that you are sitting around the campfire late at night after another day on the trail listening to Ben tell his tales. Get ready to be entertained! This book is Ben K. Green at his best.

This is one story of a trip Ben Green takes to Old Mexico to find, catch, and drive back home wild mustangs. This is all done by horseback in the days of real cowboying. He tells the reader how he catches them, trains them to drive, and the interesting people he meets on the trail. If you love horses you will love this well written adventure.

This author was one of the most unique individuals to call himself a Texan. He was a cowboy entrepreneur by the time he was 15 owned herds of horses and mules before he graduated high school. Any of his books represent an education in the early exciting days of the 20th century. He has a way of writing that will captivate your mind, quicken your imagination and absolutely thrill you to death. I lived in Texas in the middle of the last century and talked with Cowboys who had lived the same kind of life or I perhaps would not believe any of the books this writer has written. There is not a bad book in the lot. The author eventually became a veterinarian and concocted numerous medicines for animals in West Texas (Horses, cattle, swine, sheep amoung others). Most of all, he is a magnificent storyteller.

Anyone who is interested in stories from someone who has REAL knowledge of horses and horse traders, and enjoys hearing tales as the old times would tell them, will love all of Doc Greens books. I have every one I have been able to find, and have read them over and over so many times the pages are almost blank.

One of Ben Green's books that if you enjoy real adventures mixed with a little imagination it will be worth the read for you. I have been collecting Dr. Green's books since the 1980's because an old friend of mine got me started on them. I let my dad read them; and he mentioned them to his vet in Texas who said that he knew Ben personally. Although I enjoyed A Thousand Miles of Mustangin' , there are others written by Ben Green that I like better. What I really enjoy about Ben Green's books is the fact that I lived the tail-end of what and where he wrote about.(through Texas and the Southwest)

Having come from a ranching family on both sides I was raised around the art of cowboy story telling and in my opinion Ben Green's stories are some of the best by far. I treasure my collection of his books and have leant them out to many people over the years who loved them as well. If you're the least bit interested in true tales of a somewhat more modern cowboy's life you have to read these books.
