...To see this girl play. Vanessa does a wonderful job on this two track cd. A Thousand Miles is a catchy song but after going through the two tracks way to many times to count I've found that Twilight has a bit of catchyness itself, because it is live the recording shows a lot more of her real voice rather than her studio voice that has been synthesized. 1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: This is a Copy-Protected CD
Just a fair warning, since there's absolutely no indication on either the CD case or the CD itself: this CD-Single is a copy-protected CD. This means that although the "enhanced" portion of the CD's content (a music video) can be seen on your computer (via a proprietary and annoyingly pushy "Universal Media Player" that will try and install itself...

A Thousand Miles is a catchy song but after going through the two tracks way to many times to count I've found that Twilight has a bit of catchyness itself, because it is live the recording shows a lot more of her real voice rather than her studio voice that has been synthesized. Her talent shines through. She is out to show the world her true talent. She may not be as talented as Tori Amos and may be a more polished Michelle Branch but she has a style of her own not to be compared to any other piano player or any other musician for that matter. I can't wait for the full cd to come out so we can all see the full talent that she has.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, March 19, 2002

Late one evening I was watching videos on MTV and most of them were ones I had seen before and didn't interest me. But when Vanessa Carlton's video for "A Thousand Miles" came on, I was entranced. I asked myself "who is this girl?" Her amazing piano playing is what first caught my attention. I've never seen anyone play as well as she does. I was thrilled when I was shopping one day and saw the CD/single for it on sale, especially for such a low price. Another thing that pleased me is that she wrote the two songs on here ("A Thousand Miles" and "Twilight") by herself and probably did the same on her soon-to-be released debut album. Vanessa is extremely talented and deserves to be noticed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have been waiting a long time for Vanessa's work..., February 16, 2002

I first heard Vanessa on New York's Metro cable channel about three years ago. She was playing a small, intimate club, and from the first note I was captivated. As the first reviewer mentioned, she is quite appropriately being compared to Tori Amos. Her piano playing immediately channels Tori's earlier work [not the last album Tori did, which was HORRIBLE!!!]. I've seen her perform several times down in the Village, and she's even better in person. Ever since, I've been keeping a close eye out for the release of any of her music. The first sign was a song on the "Legally Blond" soundtrack, which turned out to be this single, "A Thousand Miles". Really good song, but in my opinion, the second song, "Twilight" is even better. It's very emotive, and to use Tori as a comparison again, it very much reminds me of her song "Winter".

At 1.99, these two songs are an absolute steal, and if the work on this is any indication, Vanessa will be a house-hold name by the end of 2002. You won't be dissapointed when you hear her. Run out and get this CD!

P.S. - She already has a following here in New York. I was lucky enough to get the second to last copy of this CD at the Tower Records on the Upper West side :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful piano playing, February 27, 2002
This review is from: A Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
An outstandingly good single, and at a very nice price. I heard "A Thousand Miles" on my local radio station and was hooked by the wonderful piano playing. It is one of those songs I can listen to again and again. The second song on the single, "Twilight" is also excellent, if only I could stop listening to "A Thousand Miles" long enough to listen to it again.

One thing for your information, the enhanced CD does not run on a Windows XP computer.

I first heard this song on the Launch Music website. It was Number 10 on the Krush Video Countdown. I'd never heard of Vanessa Carlton or A Thousand Miles, but I feel in love with the song instantly. I love a good song with a driving piano beat....the this song more than delivers. In short, this is an awesome song and I can't wait for more from Vanessa!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles, June 28, 2002
This review is from: A Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
Vanessa Carlton's debut single, "A Thousand Miles" first started off slow. The new talent nobody really knew about but finally came to them with this new single. "A Thousand Miles" has instantly became my favorite song of all time, and I just love this song. The single released in stores is also became one of my favorite singles. Although no remixes of the track, this still delivers a lot. This single was released WAY before Vanessa's album "Be Not Nobody" was released so it feautres some tracks that people wouldnt've heard yet. The individual reviews are below ::

1. A Thousand Miles - The greatest song I've heard in a long time. I really do LOVE this song, and I will never get tired of it. The piano, the orchestra, percussion, it's all fantastic. Vanessa Carlton's vocals are great as well. Just a great song! - 5 Stars - A+

2. Twilight (Live) - A track from her then "coming" album "Be Not Nobody", but live. The piano playing is brilliant, accurate, awesome! This song, really gives a great touch to the single. love it! - 5 Stars - A

3. A Thousand Miles (Video) - The single, being enhanced, gives you a chance to view the video to the awesome song. It's a brilliant video, with Vanessa and her piano, traveling through cities and towns. Great! - 5 Stars - A

4. Photo Gallery - Again, an addition to the single being enhanced, it gives you a glimpse of the girl who sings the great song. Features publicity photos, and it's an OK addition to the single. - 4 Stars - A-

Overall, this song is great, and the single is definitely worth your cash. Wonderful song, great bonus tracks, great video. Just a fabulous single and a song that no one will ever get tired of hearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars a new brand of pop idol., April 3, 2002
This review is from: A Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
needless to say, the success of alicia keys has sent record labels scrambling for fresh-faced piano aficionados to play christina aguilera to alicia keys' britney spears. some of them have worked out, others haven't. vanessa carlton is likely to be one that works out. while she doesn't have the type of street cred that will appeal to the lil' mo, blu cantrell and tweet crowd, she definitely has the cinderella credentials--former prima ballerina who followed her dreams to the big city and wound up a pop phenom--that will send fans of mandy moore and jessica simpson, in droves, to their local music store.

the song, itself, will quite possibly be the feel-good love song of the year and demonstrates carlton's years and years of piano training (her mother is a musician and teacher). most impressive is the fact that, while squeaky clean, freshly scrubbed and reaking of youthful exhuberance, the song is not so childlike that it will not appeal to adults.

the pairing of "thousand miles" with "twilight", however, raises more questions than it answers, the b-side being as different in style and content from the a-side as, say, karen carpenter and missy elliott. in fact, "twilight" sounds almost as if it escaped from a fiona apple recording session which, of course, is not to say that it is a bad song, but rather that it presents a little congnitive dissodance when preceded by "thousand miles". regardless, vanessa carlton is a true talent with tons of promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply AMAZING, February 21, 2002
This review is from: A Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
I am so happy that music of this quality is finally out in the world again. The actual music is simply stunning and Vanessa Carlton's voice is sublime. Both songs are GREAT and I can not wait for the album (Be Not Nobody) to be released.

These songs have actual meaning and depth. I urge everyone to pick up this CD. It is WELL worth it.

Just a fair warning, since there's absolutely no indication on either the CD case or the CD itself: this CD-Single is a copy-protected CD. This means that although the "enhanced" portion of the CD's content (a music video) can be seen on your computer (via a proprietary and annoyingly pushy "Universal Media Player" that will try and install itself once the disk is placed in your CD-Rom drive) the two actual CD tracks themselves cannot be seen in your computer's directory listing or played with standard computer audio players such as WinAmp or Windows Media Player.

Luckily this copy protection is easily defeated using the marker or post-it method to cover up the outside data table of contents on this CD-Single. But Universal should not be selling crippled CDs without informing their customers that the music they're purchasing is not playable in computer CD drives.

I know that I'm returning this CD Single as "defective" and will be telling my friends to steer clear of this single and other Universal releases of Vanessa Carlton's work. I strongly recommend that Ms. Carlton sign a new contract with a record label that doesn't automatically regard its customers as thieves.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WOULD WALK A 1000 MILES TO SEE HER IN CONCERT, March 5, 2002

This review is from: A Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
Vanessa Carlton is the new teen sensation who has recently hit the airwaves with her first single "A Thousand Miles" from her soon to be released album which I do not know when it will be released. I hope soon because this lady has a FUTURE!

When I say new teen sensation - she is NOT Britney, Jessica or even the...Christina. Carlton is a more polished Michelle Branch.

"A Thousand Miles" is a wonderfully written song, lyrically with full orchestra and hook centrals all intact. Miles plays the piano like a younger Elton John, writes her own songs and a voice that is sultry, friendly and expresses such beauty.

Vanessa Carltons song "A Thousand Miles" if any indication of what is to come is a pop song so perfectly constructed with production, structure, and lyrics it is hard to believe something so good could come out of somebody so young.

Vanessa is a treat for any age.
