5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST singles to come out this year
I'm still not tired of hearing "A thousand Miles" played on the radio. The fast pace Piano playing of Carlton, the fantastic Orchestration breaks in between the hook, and one of the coolest video's I've seen without having a half naked artist on the film.

versus
2.0 out of 5 stars Too much piano & not a very good voice
Piano in pop/rock is usually best kept in the background. There are some exceptions to this rule. John Lennon's "Imagine", for one, but that's a ballad. Piano in uptempo pop? Only Elton John and Billy Joel should really be allowed to do that. I find it hard to describe the piano playing here other than it sounds rather juvenile.

Beyond that, however, Vanessa...

5.0 out of 5 stars ordinary person, August 20, 2002

Vanessa carlton is a really good singer who writes, playes, and sings her own music. Also unlike britney spears, vanessa uses her talent and not her looks to be a really good role model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Song!, July 27, 2002
This review is from: Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
As I've said before.... Vanessa is not a wannabe. She's not a reflection of Alicia Keys. So don't judge her before you hear her.

Vanessa's got a real deep passion for her music. Just listen to Twilight, it's live too on this CD-single. Listen as she pours her heart out as she plays her piano and sings.

Vanessa of course, left the impression that after
releasing "A Thousand Miles" the rest of her songs would have the same weight.

If you haven't heard her CD "Be Not Nobody" then I'll explain what I'm talking about.

"A Thousand Miles" is more lively and vibrant with the orchestral background, but once you listen to "Twilight" her music has also got a dark side. It's just her voice and her piano.

When I heard this song, I just had to learn it, because I also play piano. Sure it was easy to learn but
it's not like it's easy to come up with the tune of a song and then come up with the melodies. It really can be complicated, So she really does deserves the credit for her awesome talent in composing.

The "Wanted" remix is cool, but I don't really like the song, but it's still great. It's mostly her voice but has cool background. Kind of like an urban edged sound. Makes you think you're in the jungle or something, LOL

Hey, for once someone's got pure classical music with their certain edge to it, playing on our radios. Well the song "A Thousand Miles" anyway, if that's the only song you like by her.

Just give her music a chance, you might find that "A Thousand Miles" is as enjoyable as any other song...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful bonus tracks, July 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
Not only delivering the track "1000 Miles," this import single shines with the other two bonus tracks featured on the CD, the live recording of "Twilight," which is, quite possibly, the best song on "Be Not Nobody," and a very creative remix of "Wanted," which adds little details here and there which highlight the song even further. Along with the Enhanced Video feature, this single is definitely worth your money, especially if you are starting your Vanessa Carlton collection strong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensational song but the other two aren't great, May 6, 2003

This is a sensational song but the others on this CD aren't anything special. There's no superb piano action in the songs Twilight and Wanted. Twilight is live and granted Vanessa does play all right live the song's not that great. This does have the Thousand Miles film clip on the CD which isn't a bad film clip. The CD single is worth buying for the excellent Thousand Miles song as well as the film clip but if you've got the album with the song on it then don't bother.

1.0 out of 5 stars Floating, tuneless, meaningless, January 17, 2004
This review is from: Thousand Miles (Audio CD)
As (at the time) a lover of female singer/keyboardists, I was tempted to buy this when i saw it in a local record store in Melbourne, where there is very little "alternative" music except violent loud noise available.

However, the song "A Thousand Miles" can only be described as tuneless and floating. there is very little solidity in the song, so much so that it becomes really tuneless. Her voice lacks the feminine expressiveness that I have come to admire in my adulthood, being rather bland and lacking any kind of melodic beauty. The piano playing also seems to have no feel behind it, with the result that she never appears to have real skill beyond that of the piano players of the notorious 1970s "beautiful music".

It is not surprising that the "pop" fans of Australia lapped this song up, but it really has little to recommend it. Rather, one could hear some Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, or better still such key influences as Laura Nyro, Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention to see the essential female contribution to the music world in the last forty years. Finding these artists is certainly worth the effort.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much piano & not a very good voice, August 15, 2002

Only Elton John and Billy Joel should really be allowed to do that. I find it hard to describe the piano playing here other than it sounds rather juvenile.

Beyond that, however, Vanessa Carlton really can't sing--at least not on this particular single. She sounds like she's trying too hard to sound "soulful", or something. At least she's on pitch, but her vocals here are very annoying to me.

The song itself isn't too bad, though the subject matter is common and overused and the lyrics aren't particularly inspired. This would have sounded a lot better with a different vocalist and a backing of acoustic guitar, bass, and drums, I think.

Vanessa Carlton is very good, her avid piano-playing and very good voice prevail in this album. A masterpiece. 5 Stars.
