A Good Album is a Good Album,
By
This review is from: A Thousand Roads [Original Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Thanks for the background on this movie's soundtrack Mr. Davids, and it's great to know you support Native American musicians. But to give this album one star out of five just because Lisa Gerrard isn't Native American is ridiculous, and frankly, racist. Peter Gabriel's "Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence" was a similarly haunting, ethereal collection of songs. The movie focused on the aboriginal peoples of Australia. Think anyone cared that Peter Gabriel isn't an aborigine? Like Gabriel, Gerrard has worked with musicians of several ethnic origins, and has always made efforts to support and promote them. This in turn increases cultural awareness of marginalized ethnicities for the mainstream consciousness, and represents one of the fundamental altruistic forces in what has been blanket-termed "world music." We should applaud musicians like Gerrard, not castigate them. Or, the very least, we should judge music by the talent of the composer, not by that composer's ethnicity. -Amahl Turczyn Scheppach, music lover. Ethnic Origin: White/Other.

If Dead Can Dance were composing these days, they should - probably - sound like on this CD!
This is a road that leads you to the heart of the North American Indians. In my opinion Lisa's voice fits in the mood this theme very well - as fit so good in Whale Rider - It's a tremendous voice wich is capable of the most stimulating and sublime enchantment - There is no need of words, only the Voice. This amazing CD although invoking the North American Indians it's a contemporary piece of music blend with textures and atmosphere - Sometimes it's an artifice but works very well because it leads you there. I like it a lot and Lisa's voice continues the same - haunting and beautiful as ever. It brings to my mind great Lisa Gerrard songs such as 'Sacrifice', 'Abwoon' and Dead Can Dance's 'The Host of Seraphim'. If you like Lisa Gerrad, Dead Can Dance and a great music score, you'll probably like this one. I'm in love with it... If you like this CD I recommend also: the compilation 'Prophesy' from Hearts O' Space, the CD 'Songs From The Cold Seas' and 'Lights In The Dark' by Hector Zazou/various, the compilation 'Northern Nights' by Sixdegrees Records. Altough some of these records are about other locations other people... the effect they had on me are equal to what I have listen on this CD. Hope you'll like them...

judging the work for the quality of the art,
This review is from: A Thousand Roads [Original Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
This album is an accomplished, gorgeous tribute that should only lead to a thousand roads of compliments. Some of the aforementioned reviewers (such as Brent Michael Davids - Composer, Mohican Nation) prove laughable in their perspectives of "hyper-political correctness." Amazon is such a mystery: that a reviewer with an Anglo name, but referring to himself as "Composer, Mohican nation," would have the nerve to criticize Lisa Gerrard (a seasoned world musician) for doing this album.
A Thousand Roads is a wonderful release that should be treasured for its inherent sound and the attention it is bringing to a culture. The entire spirit of Dead Can Dance was to bring many worlds together. Lisa Gerrard is proudly keeping this important tradition alive and well.

Sublime & Joyful,
By
This review is from: A Thousand Roads [Original Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
This record is a shear delight. Music that is at once tranquil, inspiring, beautiful, and joyful. Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance fame) and Jeff Rona have borrowed from the traditional folk music of the indiginous people of the Western hemishphere to create an amazing, contemporary and really unique score. It's playing as I write this.

Confused by Album Credits,
By
This review is from: A Thousand Roads [Original Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Most of this album is a compilation of previously written and recorded American Indian songs with the addition of original works by the producers of the album. The credtis would lead you to believe that all songs are performed by the Slovak Symphony Orchestra. This is not the case. For example, at least three are not only composed by their original artists, but "performed" by their original composers as well i.e., Shaman's Call (R. Carlos Nakai), Mahk Jchi (Ulali), and All My Relations (Ulali). These are the original recordings by these artists and appear on this album as they appear on their own albums.
I applaud Lisa & Jeff for their efforts to bring these culturally rich recordings to the mainstream, however, please give credit where credit is due.

THIS IS A RIP OFF,
By
This review is from: A Thousand Roads: Original Soundtrack To The Film (MP3 Download)
They are ripping off Native American artists Ulali and also John Trudell on this Thousand Roads soundtrack here at Amazon. The songs ALL MY RELATIONS and MAHK JCHI appear near the end, tracks 17 and 18 credited to Lisa Gerrard. When you preview the tracks, it is Ulali! Unmistakably, it is pre-released Ulali playing, not Lisa Gerrard. CRAZY HORSE, track 20, is John Trudell's music incorrectly credited to Lisa Gerrard, and improperly placed here as Lisa Gerrard and Jeff Rona's music, which it is not. And if this letdown is not disappointing enough, they are also ripping off John Trudell's SONG OF THE TREES. It is again credited to Lisa Gerrard, but when you preview it, track 19, it is the exact same recording he did in 1996 for the EarthBeat benefit CD.
This ripping off of Native American artists ULALI and JOHN TRUDELL and possibly others must be ended. Don't buy anything from Amazon until this is resolved. Several songs here are credited incorrectly to Lisa Gerrard and it is cross-contaminating MySpace song credits on the artist's own page(s). This crediting glitch is reaching back and disrupting John Trudell's MySpace page and causing harm as you read this. Amazon has been informed, MySpace has been informed, Lisa Gerrard has been informed, but nobody is lifting a finger to do a damn thing. This whole Thousand Roads title should just be deleted. Don't buy it. These sellers are completely asleep at the switch. There is no one flying the plane. Where are we going? THIS CRAZY HORSE TITLE IS NOT THE REAL SONG YOU WANT You need to search JOHN TRUDELL. This is where you will find the original CRAZY HORSE song. This other Lisa Gerrard offering is mistakenly or deliberately confused with the real one. Nobody at Amazon knows or cares apparently. The previews you hear of the last fours songs, 17-20 on this page are not Lisa Gerrard. They are Ulali and John Trudell. The song credits were fouled up by some careless, thoughtless, incompetent, possibly hateful or idiotic person who apparently hates his or her job. Mistakes can be forgiven, but this is bordering on asinine behavior. Sorry, that's just the way I see it... It's been many weeks, maybe months. Lights are on, nobody is home. Customer service gives no assurances, offers no way to follow up, no email address for the so-called "special team" that supposedly are the only ones who must research the problem. Absolutely no accountability. All these artists, Gerrard AND Trudell AND Ulali, are particularly outstanding and wonderful, but this is causing a lot of bad vibes. And the artists themselves are unable to get a human being to look at the problem! This a system berserk with non-responsiveness. The fact that nothing is being done about this for months upon months, begins to have a negative effect and reflects badly upon Lisa Gerrard, who is a respected artist herself. She has not responded to emails. Amazon representatives give no information and offer no way to follow up or even contact the so called "Special Team" that has to investigate this error or cynical ripoff by omission or whatever this is.

The human - emotion,
By Pascal (AMS, NL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Thousand Roads [Original Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Surprised as I was that Lisa Gerrard was asked to co-score A Thousand Roads, happy as I am now that she was. The soundtrack is beautiful, more then just pieces of music. Lisa's voice glues all the pieces together. Where the Indian musicians bring in the ethnic cultural pieces, it is Lisa who brings out the Human part: The emotion. It was a perfect choice eventhough Lisa Gerrard is not from Native-American decent but the film is not a National Geographic Special...

i heard two cuts from this album on a recent 'music from the hearts of space' broadcast last december. needless to say, lisa gerrard's vocals, and here combined with various indigenous north american arrangements, are stellar. i recommend this for those who are looking for ambient sounds to wind the day down. a subtle, powerful, modern collection of soundtrack compositions that is rooted in tradition. quite nice and i do plan on catching the short film next time i'm in DC.

Absolutely wonderful. I like Lisa Gerrard a lot, but this adds a haunting peaceful Navaho type sound wthoout being excessive in drumming. It is a wonderful moving soft cd. Will buy more copies for gifts.
