'On the ghats below, the morning ritual was well underway. Soapy bodies slithered about in the filmy waters and women knelt pounding and kneading wet cotton on the stepped stones above. Waiting for her is Jake Ward, the leading man who needs this movie as much as she does; her old friend and supporter, Charlie Wells, the producer; and 'Matt' Matthews, the author who is realising that Hunter's assurances mean nothing. As the group moves back and forth across the country, frustrated, appalled and dazzled by what they find, they discover passions, fall in and out of love, do battle with corruption, bureaucracy and inflict some careless damage ---all in the name of art.
