Product Description

Amazon.com

This is a clever repackaging of some of the better recordings in Shanachie's back catalog. Immigration is probably one of the overriding themes of Irish music, particularly for Irish in America. This album takes a look from both sides, with songs about coming to and being in America balanced by songs of longing by those who stayed behind. You can't complain about a collection that includes Boys of the Lough, Karan Casey, De Dannan, Dolores Keane, Planxty, and Kathy Ryan, and if you aren't familiar with the sweet and somewhat formal a cappella of Voice Squad, their heartbreaking contribution will hook you. There are also two obligatory and typically maudlin Wolfe Tones tracks. Thousands Are Sailing goes from synth-soaked to absolutely pure folk, and unless you own albums by all of these artists, you will find much to enjoy here. --Louis Gibson

I saw an ad in a catalog for this CD and I ordered it because I'm Irish and I love Irish music, well I was really disappointed with this CD and think it had potential and could have been much better. The only songs I like are Galway Bay, To Welcome Paddy Home, Rambling Irishman, Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore, and Shores Of America, the rest of the songs were just way too mellow and I had to keep myself from dozing off! I guess I just prefer the more lively, energetic Irish songs that make you want to get up and dance a jig!

This is in my opinion a superb album, with well-chosen tracks, representing very high quality Irish singing. It contains a good mixture of material and different styles of singers - all are both interesting and excellent. Niamh Parson's version of "The Boys of Barr na Sráide" is the best recording of that song I've ever heard but it's also her own finest recording (and she's Ireland best female singer in my opinion). Even if (like me) you aren't a big fan of ballad groups, the two Wolfe Tones tracks are very pleasant, and both songs are still very popular in Ireland. The Boys of the Lough tracks feature two top individual singers - Christy O'Leary (from Kerry - on "To Welcome Paddy Home") and Cathal McConnell (from Fermanagh - on "Farewell and Remember Me"), and the backing music is as good as you'll ever hear behind Irish songs (that Boys of the Lough line-up was their best ever). I hadn't ever heard of Karan Casey before this album but I'm very impressed - Shamrock Shore - a beautiful rendition of a lovely and very old song. For me these tracks alone that I've mentioned make this album worth getting. But the other material is great also. For listeners who really want some sense of the Irish psyche regarding emigration, get it. It's the real thing.

I have many Irish CD's and tapes and this is one of the CD's I have in my collection and it's okay but personally I think there are much better Irish albums out there.
