About the Author

Joko Budiono lives and teaches art in San Francisco. Born in Indonesia, he grew up fascinated by cartoons and developed a keen appreciation for visual art. After studying at the Academy of Art University, Joko collaborated with Leandro Ng and Thomas Denmark to write and illustrate an artist's manual in applying and mastering the principles of perspective, Creative Layout: Perspective for Artists (out of print). Joko's follow-up book, The Thousandth Thumbnail, continues his exploration of concept development and composition. These days, Joko enjoys teaching and watching his students' abilities grow, while also preparing illustrations for his next book.

Joko's book is a masterful example of process. Joko takes the reader though the steps to find that one perfect image. From the squiggly line thumbnails, through color comps, all the way to the final image. An inspiring work and a must have in any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Master's Class in Composition, July 11, 2009
This review is from: The Thousandth Thumbnail (Hardcover)
Joko Budiono is a master of composition, and he breaks down the process into easy to understand steps with hundreds of examples.

This book is filled to overflowing with great ideas and great drawings. Budiono's understanding of perspective, form, and value pattern are evident in each thumbnail. He shows everything from atmospheric perspective to 3-point and 5-point (!) perspective in this book!

This is a book of thumbnails. The drawings are rough, as they should be, to teach the beginning artist, and to remind the seasoned pro, how to create good compositions and to use all the basic art skills to great effect.

This book gets the highest recommendation and should be on your shelf next to the other essential how to art books.
