From Library Journal
Young Nell Winston leaves her job at a small English resort hotel to assume the daunting post of paid companion to Allegra Selkirk, a 19-year-old girl injured in the same carriage wreck that killed her parents. It is 1893, Freud's ideas about hysterical illness are circulating, and Allegra's non-resident guardian hopes Nell can effect a cure?as well as spy on the uncle, aunt, and shifty doctor who hold heiress Allegra in thrall. Other traditional elements ensue: enviable country estate, secret love affair across class boundaries, sleeping potions and laudanum, etc. Largely formulaic and derivative, this title will appeal principally to series fans and young adults.
