Squaresoft has satisfied my taste once again with Threads of Fate. If you have played Brave Fencer Musashi, this game will seem a very familiar. It is a mix of action and RPG elements. First of all, the player can choose from two different characters: Rue, a boy with a mysterious past, or Mint, an ex-princess that was kicked out of the castle for being rambunctious and rowdy. Both stories are mostly the same, but approaches to situations and even some areas are different. Rue's story is very serious, while Mint's quest is relaxed and humorous. Rue and Mint each offer different play styles. Rue has the ability to transform into previous creatures that he has defeated. Using this ability, he can avoid obstacles and solve puzzles. Mint, on the other hand, gets to use magic. Mint's story is more fun, in my opinion, because she learns an array of spells and insults everybody else in the game in a funny fashion. Both characters have been searching for a "relic." Rue has been searching for it to revive his lost love, Claire. Mint wants to get revenge on Maya, her younger sister who will now be successor to the throne, and Mint also wants to achieve world domination. The game's music is superb, while the graphics are even more excellent. The game sounds and appears crisp and clear, and the characters are a little cartoony but without becoming ridiculous. The game has a very active feel which keeps you alert. Your character runs around and fights at the same time, which is reminiscent of the style in Brave Fencer Musashi. The gamer can finish both Rue's and Mint's scenarios for a special treat! Since it is hard to get every secret on the first run, playing the game a second time is still great. Overall, the game is fun to watch and fun to play, and can make you laugh aloud. I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants an exciting adventure!

I've been interested in this title ever since I found the japanese intro on the web, when it was still just called DewPrism. When the demo was first brought to America, I immediately went out and got it. And I must say, I am extremely impressed. The interface is beautiful to say the least. With two characters to play as (Rue is good, Mint is slightly evil, if you didn't already know), with intertwining storylines, Threads of Fate promises to be the best action rpg ever. The controls are simple, and only take a few moments to fully master, and is so close in graphic-type and controlswise to Brave Fencer Musashi that I consider it 'Brave Fencer Musashi 2'. Of course, the graphics, storyline, and abilites are far superior to BFM. If you decide to play as Rue, you can morph into any enemy you killed by collecting a coin out of the first one you killed, and each transformation has different abilites, some of which are quite funny (like the porcupine-type creature in the demo). It appears that in the game, that your maximum hit points increases while running around fighting, instead of like in BFM and most other RPGs, where you have to gain a certain amount of exp to possibly raise your hp. If you decide to play as Mint, you use magic instead of transforming. Personally, I find Mint's game harder than Rue's. If you liked Brave Fencer Musashi, or are just a big Squaresoft fan, then you'll LOVE Threads of Fate! I think this game is worth buying, most definetly.

Find the Relic!,

This review is from: Threads of Fate (Video Game)
I originally bought this game for my sister for her birthday ( I preordered it!) But she never played it. So, I started playing it and found myself hooked on this game! The storyline is so awesome and the characters are terrific! Play as Princess Mint, the magic-wielding girl who lost her right to the throne of the East Heaven Kingdom to her little sister and find the relic so she can regain her title! Or, play as Rue, the young boy who lost his best friend, Claire, to a monster. Use his ability to schange into defeated monsters to help him get the relic so he can bring Claire back. Fight Belle and Duke, the treasure hunters, and battle Rod the Blade Star (and his best pal, Johnny Wolf!) and his mighty weapons! This game is incredible! The best part is, after you beat both games (you have to sit through the credits and save the game at the prompts EVERY TIME), you can play again with the same powers as you had when you finished the last time! You can even play BOTH scenarios at the SAME TIME once you beat both! GET THIS GAME!

After playing the demo of this game, I was very impressed. The battles, though easy, were very fun because of the auto-tracking on enemies. Rue is a blast to play with because he can transform into almost every enemy. And Mint is also cool to play with because of the powerful magic she uses. The graphics, though cartoony, were absolutely incredible. The music also added an excellent touch. What I thought was very interesting was the way you gain HP(health points). By getting hurt, you gain a few HP. Add in the humor that Mint spews out every once in a while, and this adds up to a great game. If you like RPG\adventure games, this is definetly one to get.

I played the demo for Threads of Fate when I bought Vagrant Story and this game is very fun. It doesn't take a long time to get used to the controls and the battles are easy. This isn't like any other Squaresoft game, but Brave Fencer Musashi. This game is much better than BFM. The graphics, controls, and plot are much better. I wouldn't really call this game an RPG, but more like an Action/Adventure, but it's still a lot of fun. I'm definitaly going to buy it and I'm telling you you'll like it too.

Another wonderful game from square!,

Square has outdone themselves this time. The story of both character's quests are gripping and to me personally the quests are so moving that I want to beat it without cheats. The story concerns the lives of two characters, A mysterious and polite boy named Rue, and a rude, funny princess named Mint. Rue's weapon is called the Arc Edge, And Mint has two golden rings that she can use to do Magic. Rue has the amazing ability to change into foes he previously deafeated. Rue's quest is saddening and powerful while Mint's is funny yet the story still accomplishes to make you want to beat the game and find out what happens. If you are looking for a good RPG game you will enjoy Threads of Fate. If you are looking for a game with more action and shooting then try games like Syphon Filter or Metal Gear solid. If you want a good racing game try Gran Turismo. But Threads of Fate is a good game. Try it out.

I've played the demo of this that comes with Vagrant Story, and it was pretty fun. You play as either a boy(Rue) or a girl(Mint). In the demo, if you play as Mint, you meet up with Rue, but it doesn't happen in opposite with Rue. I have a feeling that whichever character you pick, you interact with the other throughout the game. Rue can transform into monsters, and Mint has magic. The controls are pretty easy, and it seems that your MAX HP just gradually increases as you fight, because that's what happens in the demo. That seems like a pretty inovative substitute for actual level building. All in all, I think this game resembles Brave Fencer Musashi quite a bit. It looks like a cool game so far, and I was happy with the demo, so it would probably be a good buy for Squaresoft or RPG fans.

One of my favorite SquareSoft games!,
By Dani Nymeyer (Arizona) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Threads of Fate (Video Game)
Threads of Fate is one of the few games that I have found myself playing over and over again, to the point of memorizing it, and still having fun with it. You start the game by choosing between one of two very different main characters: Rue, a boy with a mysterious past who goes through the game in an almost tragic way; or Mint, a spunky girl who goes through the game with a fiery passion.
Both Mint and Rue are after the legendary relic, Dewprism, for two very different reasons. With the relic, Rue will be able to revive his lost, sister-like friend, Claire; and Mint will be able to get revenge on her younger sister Maya for stealing Mint's right to the throne, and also will be able to accomplish world domination, "baby!" I was a bit disappointed to find that while Mint and Rue are both very different characters after the relic for very different reasons, both games are almost exactly the same. Both characters fight the same "bosses," and acquire the same items, there is only a few changes in bosses and items between the two games. The game is still fun because while they are similar in a lot of ways, there is also a lot of distinct differences. For one, the way Mint and Rue attack is very different from eachother. Rue has the power to transform into past monsters that he has killed, and is even able to use their attacks; while Mint has self-taught magic that expands as Mint grows with experience. I've always enjoyed playing Mint's game more than Rue's. Rue's story is very serious and very sad, there is hardly any humor at all in his story, and when there is a little humor, it seems forced. Mint's story, however, is filled with humor... but not to the point where it becomes annoying or silly. Mint has a fun character and isn't afraid to speak her mind whenever she feels the need to. Her story is much more light-hearted than Rue's, which is why I enjoy her game more. This game is about five years old now, and it shows in the graphics. While these graphics may have been superb five years ago, technology has advanced very quickly and the graphics in Threads of Fate now seem too simple. However, the music in this game seamlessly make up for this. The music is exhilarating, soothing, or powerful; depending on what is happening in the game. I know that there is a soundtrack somewhere out there, but I have had trouble finding it. It would be a great soundtrack to own, though! Overall, I love this game. It is fun to play through a second time (or more!) and try to uncover all of the secrets. Defeat both Mint's and Rue's game for a special surprise! The ending of this game suggests a sequel, but I haven't heard anything about it... I've played this game many times and still love it. I've found, though, that after you know the "secrets" to defeating the "bosses," then the game suddenly becomes extremely easy to play. The game is still fun anyway, though. I would recommend this game to any gamer looking for something fresh and fun!

Threads of Fate, also known as Dew Prism, is one of those games you will either like or hate. It is probably Squaresoft's least anticipated game for this summer's lineup, but dont tear it away from you already. The graphics are very colorful, and the gameplay is fun and different from other games. There are two quests, with two different characters, with two different types of abilities. One of the quests, Rue the mysterious boy, has the ability to change into monsters he has defeated, and is seeking the Dew Prism to find his lost love, Claire. The girl's quest is totally different, for she can use magic spells she has seen or earned. Both of the character's quests tie in together. Both have a regular weapon, and gain experience. The game's fighting system is extremely simple. You press a button for jumping, a button for attacking, a button for power attacking, and a button for the menu. The L and R buttons help you use magic. Overall, this is a very average, simple action/rpg, but if you have the choice of buying this or square's masterpiece Vagrant Story, forget about this for now.

Welcome back from 2003 Year of the Replay,
By Nicolas Green "Starving Poet" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Threads of Fate (Video Game)
Well, it's been two years since I bought this game and I finally got around to playing it. Threads of Fate was one of Squaresofts 'trial games' from the Summer of Square in 2000. I say it's a trial game because Square rarely brings their RPG talents into the real-time action adventure arena. For fans of Brave Fencer Musashi this game is a must buy. It showcases a similar fighting system and one of the playable characters (Rue)is able to take on the traits of his recently defeated enemies. Whereas the other character (Mint) uses her skill in magic to fight the bad guys.Unfortunately, there isn't much to this game. The challenge is very low and the only parts that can be considered hard fall into the "Time your jumps or else" annoyance category. My first playthrough only took me 7 hours and in that time I was able to find all the hidden items. However, the games saving grace is its humor and that you are able to play through the game using the 2 different characters. While not one of Square's best games, I recommend this to someone looking for a quick little diversion, or even to the more amateur gamers out there. |
