5.0 out of 5 stars criminally overlooked...., May 28, 2002
This review is from: Three AM (Audio CD)
How Ms. Lieberum is still relatively undiscovered is beyond me. I'm not a big fan of vocal jazz and when I first read about this album it was described as vocal jazz so it didn't initally pique my interest. But I saw this album on Amazon and read up a little more on her and her music and I got this CD. It's probabaly one of the best albums I've heard in a while. This album is incredible in its style, musicianship, songwriting and above all originality. What do you call this? Haute Hop? Trip Bop? To classify her just as vocal jazz is pretty unfair. Ms. Lieberum's combination of straight ahead vocal jazz with trip hop makes for an incredibly interesting and enjoyable listen. Highly, highly, highly recommended for anyone who likes intelligent, original, listenable music.

5.0 out of 5 stars You ought to listen to an album like this., September 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Three AM (Audio CD)
Somebody once told me that good music organizes your imagination. Well let me tell you that this music does that and then some. The first time I put it on it took me on a trip. As a working record producer and a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., I am always relieved and grateful to hear a female voice who's speaking about reality in her music rather than just talking the talk with some silver pants cause Puff Daddy gave her a check and said go. I get tired of all these wanna-be R&B "soul singers" who pop themselves around like they've got something urgent and mean to say when all that comes out of their mouths is a constant stream of cotton candy. This album by Gretchen that I just bought is real, my friends--straight from the heart and it's a big heart too. Listen up: her lyrics are deep and the music has got layers that'll make you go "God damn!". Listen to an album like this and you'll remember why you care about music.

I bought this cd out of a music rack of cds selling for 1 dollar near st mark's place in nyc in 2000. I chose it simply because the title 3 am reminded me of how often I chose to go to bed at that time. This was the best music discovery I ever made. She is now one of my favorite artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves to Top the Charts, November 20, 2000

Ms. Gretchen Lieberum must be one of the most unrecognized music artists out there because if her music were ranked with others on terms of musicianship and enjoyability, this album would top the list. It's an interesting mix of solid jazz and funk with a swatch of mellow in it. As opposed to most jazz albums where the songs begin to blur together, Ms. Lieberum's songs are separately distinctive yet maintain the same fluidity. Not only can Gretchen sing better than the best of them, she's backed up by some incredible musicians. I'd be very surprised if any jazz music lover who also likes the sounds of Dido didn't adore this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Within the voice., November 16, 2000
This review is from: Three AM (Audio CD)
Most would say," I love to play this at night". But this music, this artist, this voice - deserves more, much more. Ms. Lieberum's voice envelopes you, transforms you, until you've forgotten who or where you are. Have you ever heard that one song, or voice, that just makes you fall in love ? I have - and her name is Gretchen Lieberum !

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE IF U R A REAL MUSIC LOVER, December 21, 2000

About twice a year I come across an album which should be in every music lovers home. This is one of the two. I especially love the fact that I found this cd on my own on the internet. Hopefully with the internet we REAL music lovers will be able to help REAL artist make a living which they truly deserve. This album is going to go in a few stockings this year, I at least know I am giving some out. If you really want to get an album that is strong from beginning to end then waste no more time reading this and purchase it. Believe me I am a hard to please music lover and I am truly pleased with this piece of artwork. This is an album that deserves to be purchased and not just downloaded.

5.0 out of 5 stars New use for the present..., October 19, 2000

"auzemoto" (College Station, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three AM (Audio CD)
Most of my life, I've been teased for being out of the loop. Unwilling to jump on board the latest, greatest craze of the masses. Musically, I prefer the great and lasting voices. Singers like Billie Holiday, Etta James, and the queen, Koko Taylor. Add to that brilliant songwriters like Berlin, Gershwin, and Porter. Well, musically I haven't had much use for the present. Until now, that is.

Gretchen Lieberum sings with all the textured beauty of reality. In her voice, tenderness and joy embrace the bitter chill of lonely nights. Her songs are honest and bold, but unlike so many of her peers, she doesn't go for the cheap thrills of affected pain. She allows the songs to grow of their own strength and courage. Not telling us how to feel, but merely acting as guide for the journey. The brilliance of this young artist left me breathless the first time I heard "Three A.M.", and now, months later, continues to quicken the beat of my heart and give me reason to pull my eyes from the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best of independent music, December 27, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Three AM (Audio CD)
If Independent Music existed, and if, say, one was able to make a living selling music on the internet without say, a major label financing and promoting the enterprise, one would hope, even insist as a consumer, that the music, that is THE ART were of a higher quality than is regularly pumped out by the MACHINE. Such is the case with Three A.M.. No pandering here. No glossy, prefabricated hipster floss. All we have in this album is a musical VISION progressing seamlessly through the architecture of its own uncompromised imagination.
