5.0 out of 5 stars Another Vote for Goldilocks
Our toddler daughter adores this book, and constantly wants to read it over and over. 3.0 out of 5 stars Very cute, but part of story missing!
I picked this up for my son, because the illustrations were so cute and it's such a classic story. But -- watch out -- the copy
we have seems to have skipped over a page or something in the manufacturing. There is a whole section of the story...and my favorite part at that...the "this porridge is too hot, too cold, just right" section...missing! I just...

Our toddler daughter adores this book, and constantly wants to read it over and over. It piqued her awareness of possession -- she started pointing at our chairs and saying "daddy's" and "mommy's", and then pointing and everything else she could find and saying daddy's" or "mommy's". She also made many more comments about how hot or cold various food or beverages were. We have some of Barton's other books, and I think his illustration style works incredibly well for very young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of our family's most favorite books!, November 20, 2002
By
K. Ryan (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
We checked this book out of the library when our oldest daughter was 2 (she is now 7). She loved it so much, we bought it. It was the first book that she memorized and we video taped her "reading" it and using different voices for each bear. The same thing happened with our son (now 4) - it was the first book he "read" to himself. And he still enjoys having the story read to him (sometimes by his big sister). Now our third child (2 year old daughter) loves to have the book read to her and "reads" it to whoever will listen.

The colors and illustrations are bold and fun. The story and illustrations are simple yet there are small details - like flowers that Goldilocks drops as she moves along - that spark a child's interest and interaction. We have even done projects using this book. With construction paper, scissors and glue, the children recreate pages from the book.

I can't say enough about this book. We have bought it for all of our little friends and for any new babies that arrive.
We have also enjoyed and purchased Barton's other books - but there is just a special place in our hearts for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Three Bears story for young children!!, September 12, 2002
This review is from: The Three Bears (Hardcover)
I can't give enough rave reviews about this Byron Barton version of the Three Bears. The story is intrigueing enough for our almost 3yr old son, while the bright, simple illustrations hold the interest of our 11-month old daughter. The story is not at all wordy, yet it is definitely the complete Three Bears story. Byron Barton even adds another concept to the story. While the porridge is too hot or cold, and the beds are too hard or soft, the rocking chairs rock too fast or too slow. I love the early concepts the story introduces and the simple, yet well done illustrations and writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Just right", January 29, 2005

I got this book when my son was 13 months. He loved it and now that he is 18 months he still does. the colors are bright and different in all the pages, the sentences are short enough to keep the baby's attention on the story, and I found the book great to teach opposites. Now when I read the book and I say "the porridge was too hot" my son can complete the next sentence "the porridge was too COLD". And so on with the rest of the story. I say it's a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kirkus may not love it, but Molly did!, March 6, 1998

My first daughter loved this book so much she was always asking us to read it to her. Isn't _that_ what counts in a children's book? Our copy has been handled so much it's disintegrated. We may need another one for our second daughter...

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!, June 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My 19-month old is an avid reader in the making, and I'm always looking for new stories for him that are in his age-range. Sometimes we read stuff that's way too old for him, which he doesn't mind in the least, but he needs some "baby books" too. I purchased all of the Byron Barton board books about planes, boats, trucks, etc., and my son really loved them, so I picked this one up as well.

It's become a HUGE favorite of his. And he likes to help read it during the parts where he knows the words - "baby bear," the "chairs," and counting the bowls of porridge.

The drawings are really simple, and I'd almost call it a "boy's book." There's nothing "girlie" about this story - even Goldilocks looks a little burly in the illustrations.

Personally, I love it ... and it passed the kid-test, which is really what counts!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite "Three Bears" for preschoolers, November 9, 2010
This review is from: The Three Bears (Hardcover)
This version of "The Three Bears," illustrated by the wonderful Byron Barton, is the favorite of the young children I teach. The pictures are very simple and bright with fun details - for instance, Goldilocks leaves flowers, so you can tell where she's been. If you're reading this to preschoolers, be sure to have fun with the bears' different voices, especially the cute little voice of Baby Bear - kids love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super cute illustrations for a simple classic., September 13, 2010
I told my daughter the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears recently, and it instantly became her favorite story. Browsing through the book store, we saw this version, and she loved it. The illustrations inside match the cute cover image. The story itself is the traditional tale of the Three Bears: they make some porridge but it's not ready to eat, so they go out for a walk. A little girl named Goldilocks happens to show up, and tries out the porridge while no one's around. Then she makes herself comfortable and tries out the bears' chairs and then their beds when she's ready for a nap. The bears show up, and she high tails it outta there.

The Three Bears is a quick read, great for a short story before bedtime. There's nothing really objectionable about it, and it does have the lesson of not eating or taking what isn't yours. Really, the only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the price. Like I just said, this is a very quick read, and whether you get it in hardcover, paperback or the little board book version, it still feels a few bucks over what it should be. Either way, it's a cute book. Though you might want to go for a story collection of classics like this that tend to run for about the same price. Whatever you do, you can't go wrong with the Three Bears!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers, July 31, 2009
I'll start by saying that I don't the illustrations in this book: they are too rigid and basic for my taste and lack whimsy. That said, I have been reading this book to my now 24-month old son since he was 15 months old and he loves it. It's the first real story book he has ever heard, and he is at an age where he likes following basic stories instead of just books that illustrate and name animals and objects. Story board books are hard to find for this age group; most story books are paper pages for older children. This is all a long way of saying though I don't like the look of the book, my son does and that's success to me. He asks for us to read it to him repeatedly every night.
