I bought this box set after I came across an old Browns LP. Luckily, I found a used copy of the box set, but it is worth every penny. If the word sublime can be applied to country music, then this Box set is endlessly sublime. The most beautiful and hypnotic harmonies I've ever heard. Also, 7 1/2 of the 8 CDs are produced by Chet Atkins, so if you like his sound, this is an exquisite example. Forgive all the long words, but it is hard to put into words how great I think The Browns' music (and this box set) really is.

The Browns have to be one of the most gorgeous harmony vocal trios i've ever heard, especially in country music. Like someone else have said, some of these songs are so beautiful they'll make you want to weep. I'm not sure if i hear them in there too, but it sure sounds like the Anita Kerr singers are also singing harmony with them, which just makes the harmonys even more fully resonant and achingly gorgeous than it would be without them. I highly recommend this box set to anyone who loves harmony and beautiful songs as much as i do. If you're a music fan at all and you have the cash, i'd go for it. The more people listening and enjoying The Browns, the better of a world it is.

This is absolutely incredible; if you want to know anything about the Browns, this box set will deliver. Another great Bear Family release; I am quickly becoming one of their biggest fans. But back to the Browns, there are more songs here than you could ever listen to in one sitting. I nearly got burnt out after just two CD's; we're talking atleast 30 numbers per CD....and 8 CD's! I honestly dont think it would be possible to compile a more complete catalog of this trio, it is truly amazing. The harmonies Jim Ed and his sisters put forth are crystal clear here and we can thank Chet Atkins for that. I wont waste time or space listing songs, as they are all here; but I will say that if you have not heard "Im in Heaven" or "I Take the Chance", you haven't the slightest idea what perfection is. If I have one criticism, and I really wouldn't call it that, it is that there are a few pop-oriented numbers here.....but that was the direction Nashville was pushing the Browns for many years. Just an absolutely incredible collection.

Hi,I paid about AU $200 for this box set about 5-6 years back & don't regret spending the money. It is one of my best purchases ever.
Giving this only 5 stars does not do it justice.I am still often playing some of the songs every 3-4 days.I think I first heard the Browns years ago when "three bells: & "scarlet ribbons" were new releases & always loved those songs. Some time a few years back I heard a few more of their songs & decided to purchase the box set. This is Harmony at it's very best and if there is anyone as good then I've never heard them. They are in a class of their own,and the lyrics are awesome as well. What more can I say,If you can afford it buy it.

This is the most exciting collection of the Browns that I have ever come across. If there are any songs that wasn't included in this collection of this fabulous group, I haven't heard them. All I can say is, "It's Fantastic!!" The incerts are very informative also. If you like HARMONY at it's best. You'll love this! ENJOY.

INTRODUCTION:

The Browns were an American country and folk music vocal trio, composed of Jim Ed Brown and his sisters Maxine and Bonnie Brown. They had a close, smooth harmony characteristic of the Nashville sound, though their music also combined elements of folk and pop. They disbanded in 1967.

The group’s singing career consists of different names (just like the Supremes):
1 Jim Edward & Maxine Brown (on Fabor label, 1954)
2 Jim Edward, Maxine & Bonnie Brown (RCA Victor, 1955 – 1957)
3 The Browns (RCA Victor, 1957 – 1959)
4 The Browns, featuring Jim Edward Brown (RCA Victor, 1960 – 1966)
5 The Browns (RCA Victor, 1966 – 1967)
Jim Ed Brown went solo in 1965 as Jim Edward Brown (1965 – 1967) and Jim Ed Brown (1967 -1981).

CONTENT:

This giant box set, from Bear Family in Germany released in 1993, contains 8 CDs.

Disc 1: 32 songs (1954 - 1957)
Disc 2: 33 songs (1957 – 1959)
Disc 3: 34 songs (1959 – 1960)
Disc 4: 32 songs (1960 – 1961)
Disc 5: 32 songs (1961 – 1963)
Disc 6: 32 songs (1963 – 1964)
Disc 7: 31 songs (1964 – 1966)
Disc 8: 32 songs (1966 – 1967)

Total: 258 songs (1954 – 1967)

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 Take my word, this is the most complete, comprehensive coverage of all the songs by the Browns during their entire career. They have 21 charted singles on the Billboard Country Chart. I have just painstakingly finished a Complete Singles Discography on the Browns, and have discovered 42 singles (charted and uncharted, from 1954 to 1967), with 80 songs (not 84 songs because 4 were repeat releases). Every song in the singles discography is found in this set.
