Editorial Reviews

Three Bells is an historic collaboration between Dobro masters Jerry Douglas (13-time Grammy winner and three-time Country Music Association Musician of the Year, dubbed by James Taylor "the Muhammad Ali of the Dobro"), Mike Auldridge (1970's pioneer, member of The Seldom Scene, and sideman for Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt), and Rob Ickes of Blue Highway, the most awarded instrumentalist in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Three Bells finds these master musicians employing their prodigious talents to create a set of spare, emotionally-affecting instrumental performances of original tunes and venerable pop and country numbers. Three Bells is these musicians' first work together since 1994's Grammy-winning The Great Dobro Sessions, and features the final recordings of Douglas' longtime friend and mentor Auldridge, who passed away shortly after the sessions were completed.

It's difficult to write objectively about this recording, so that's how it goes. Whether the songs are old standards (Silver Threads, Till There Was You, The Three Bells) or originals, the seamless blending of the three Dobro masters is essentially flawless. Better ears than mine may hear room for improvement, but to mine, this is as good as it gets. There are no additional players or vocals to distract from the purity of Mike's, Jerry's, and Rob's interplay. They flow effortlessly among and between each other, concealing the hard work that must have gone into this project. Jerry's and Rob's essays on Mike display their love and respect for him, and the honor they must have felt at working with the man who was, at the time, the greatest living Dobro player.

Play this often, and occasionally through headphones for some true revelations as to what was going on. Go ahead -- crank up the volume up just a bit. And show everyone you know who might be even the least bit interested. They'll thank you!

This is as pure as a recording can get. Three players who have mastered this instrument and taken it to the highest level produced these recordings that are unlike any I have heard and probably unlike any I will ever hear again. The spirit of Mike Auldridge will live forever in Three Bells, and Jerry and Rob will carry it on.

One of the most beautiful instruments in the world played by three of the best. Mike Auldridge introduced me to the dobro 30 years ago and I have been a big fan ever since.

The tunes on this album are beautifully played, you can feel the fun the guys are having. It almost sounds easy!

And nothing gets in the way.

For those of us who relish the sound of a resonator guitar (dobro), this album is the ultimate joy to our ears. The musical interplay between these three gifted musicians is as close to perfection as can be humanly achieved. If you can only acquire one dobro CD, this is definitely the one to have.

As one who loves the Dobro, having a recording by three of the top players ever was intriguing.
The sounds that you will hear on this recording are truly amazing. The three of them blend together to produce a sound that has never been heard in this fashion before. The only issue is that it is ALL Dobro, and that at times is a little bit too much. Other instruments and a vocal or two would have made for an overall better recording to listen too. If you love the sound of the Dobro and want a recording that produces its sounds like no other, then this is for you.
It is a very enjoyable piece to listen too, and the things missing are minor in the overall scope of the recording. Douglas is doing his part to try to preserve some of the finest musical talent that has ever lived and this does a very good job of doing just that.

A really great album from 3 of the best dobro players ever. You may think 3 dobros/ resonator instruments (with no other instruments) wouldn't sound very pleasing (like on David Grisman's Tone Poems 3, which is a bit harsh on some songs), but they pull it off perfectly. And Jerry Douglas does not produce a bad album and this is no exception. You hear everything in perfect harmony and clarity with sweetness and balance. An absolute must own for all dobro players (like me) and any fan of acoustic musical greatness. The song "North" is just ripping bad-assness and "Dobro Heaven" is truly beautiful. They're all pretty great! RIP Mike Auldridge. You were an amazing talent and inspiration and may your music live on forever.

This is music played with excellence and restraint, a superb example of the old adage that it's not what you put in, but what you leave out, that produces a work of excellence. In that respect, the choices made in the making of this suite of tunes must have been of the very highest quality. Douglas is a master, and he, Ickes and Auldridge are simply superb on this CD.
