Great Story But Ending Has Become Too P.C.,
By RCL (Alexandria VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Three Billy Goats Gruff (Flip Up Fairy Tales) (Paperback)
My children loved this story when they were little 30 years ago. I am now buying the book for their kids. The story is simple but intriguing - it has a monster, it has some repetition, it has sturdy though simple pop-ups. But in the original, the biggest billy goat butted the troll off of the bridge to be swept away in the stream - good triumphs over evil. In this version, the billy goats stay away from the troll after tricking him, and the troll just packs his bag and moves away -- confrontation avoided. Somehow, it's not quite right.

The ending had been changed from the version I grew up reading. I didn't think it fit as well. The quality of the book construction was good and could withstand the handling given by a youngster. The art work also seem to hold the young readers attention.

really liked this book overall. The kids really liked the flaps and the illustrations were good, although the troll was rather bizarre looking.
