SEE HOW THEY RUN,
By Michael Butts (Berkeley Springs, WV USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Three Blind Mice (DVD)
A complex but coherent script from Anne Gerard and Adam Greeman, based on bestselling novelist Ed McBain's book, THREE BLIND MICE is a made for Tv movie elevated by some puzzling twists and a good performance from Brian Dennehy. Dennehy plays a lawyer who is called upon to defend an old Vietnam buddy for the brutal slaying of three Vietnamese youths who supposedly attacked his wife and then were found not guilty. Dennehy's investigation leads to a coverup, and he works hard to find the real culprit. The identity is pretty unexpected.
Dennehy receives good support from Rosalind Chao as an interpreter he finds himself fancying; Mary Stuart Masterson as his opposing attorney; John Doman as the accused; Debrah Farentino as his distraught wife; and Glenn Plummer as his private investigator. Only Jason Beghe (Monkey Shines) as the state investigative attorney's performance is listless and not up to his co-stars standards. Well directed by Christopher Leitch, THREE BLIND MICE is an involving little thriller.

Magnificent movie! .,

Brian Denehy is a superb actor. He always seems to elevate the quality of every film he appears . (Remember him in The belly of an arquitect or Bestseller, for instance). Gifted with strong character , and charimatic personality he reminds very often me to Broderick Crawford , a hard actor of the fifties (All the king's men).
In this film he is an attorney who must to defend a man framed of murder. The puzzle script is absorbing and deeply haunting ,specially in some sequences like instance that one in which we see stating the point that not all Vietnam veterans are murders by definition. Christopher Leicht has made a punch movie and we expect new works from this consistent director . He reveals himself as a young promise in this hard competing office . Jill Stuart Masterton gives a credible performance. Acquire this one and please: the title is not related with Agatha Christie novel .

The book was an excellent read when I read it first many decades ago. When a film is made based on a book, it becomes difficult to capture the overall feel and characters of the book due to the lack of narrative capabilities. However, this film is one delightful exception. The characters, plot, speed, theme, and settings have been kept very close to the book. Gripping tale that is narrated beautifully, acted very well, and overall flow of the movie is great. If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend at least watching the movie.

The book is great.
The movie OK and follows the plot of the novel. Sad there ain't any subtitles. And Brian? - He seems tired all the time or suffers from the Calusa heat- is a Pigface instead of Matthew Hope's Foxface. Most of the players are great. I do recommend. J.P. |
