Editorial Reviews

For over 20 years, Face To Face has sold over 750,000 albums, and played sold out venues all across the world, and they've done it on their own terms. The bands 2013 album Three Chords and a Half Truth was self-produced and recorded at frontman Trevor Keith's home studio in Nashville, TN. Face To Face are nothing short of a legacy, and with Three Chords and A Half Truth they're showing just why they've become one of the most respected and appreciated punk bands of all time.

I often return to this album thinking, "Hey, it wasn't really that bad, was it?" And every time I remind myself, "Yes, it really was that bad." I had hoped that 'Laugh Now, Laugh Later' would be a springboard to better material, not worse. I guess we'll always have Don't Turn Away and the self-titled album.

Having carved their name out in the 1990's So Cal punk scene, Face to Face always stood apart from their contemporaries because rather than embracing the (admittedly fun) juvenile attitudes and pop-punk goofiness, they exuded an air of seriousness and pertinency that had been lacking in punk rock since the mid 1980's.

Three Chords and a Half Truth is their ninth full length album, and second since their hiatus that began in the early 2000's. Fans who were thrilled by Laugh Now, Laugh Later and were hoping to get a part 2, may be slightly disappointed, as Three Chords is a completely unique entry in the F2F cannon. This is not to say that it is bad (far from it, this thing is great!), but rather that Trever Keith and company are trying to keep things fresh, both for themselves and for the fans. Besides, anyone that expects F2F to put out the same album twice in a row clearly hasn't been paying attention.

Now, don't get me wrong. Three Chords and a Half Truth is a very punk record, there is no need to worry that this will be another Ignorance Is Bliss (read: a drastic deviation from their sound), but it would also be insincere of me to not acknowledge that the recent acoustic tour celebrating that infamous album didn't have some impact on this newer offering by reminding the band how rewarding a touch of experimentation can be. This time around, they proudly wear on their sleeves the influences that clearly shaped their musical direction in their formative years. Traces of The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and Social Distortion can be heard at varying points through the record. This collection of sounds doesn't give the album a disjointed feel, though, but rather keeps it exciting with each subsequent listen, and makes this an album where one size fits all.

I was expecting this record to be more in the vein of "How to Ruin Everything" because Trevor said the songs are more influenced by Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, etc. The difference is that this record has no punch to it. There's not really any fast tunes on here, which is completely fine if there was really something compelling to carry them. The vocal sound and lyrics are the most lackluster parts of the record. Many of the songs may start with a cool bass line or guitar riff and instead of any sort of buildup to the verses or chorus, the song does the opposite, it gets more dull. I don't really see anyone liking this record, whether you loved the first 3 albums or "Ignorance is Bliss." It's not a sellout record by any means, just verily lame. This was by far the most disappointing record I've checked out in the last few years. Buy the new Alkaline Trio or Off With Their Heads instead.

I will be the first to admit, being a Face to Face fan for years, when I first heard the single Right as Rain a few weeks back, I was taken back a little. Let me tell you Three Chords is an AWESOME album by Face to Face. You have to listen to this more than once, to know what I am talking about. The first listen may not do it for you. All songs & lyrics are great on this cd, catchy, melodic and meaningful, just LISTEN to it. I think this band can do anything without getting it wrong. Like Ignorance is Bliss, this may take a few listens but after a while, you become hooked. My favorite tracks 123 DROP-listen to the words to it, I love it, a lot of people can relate to this song, WELCOME BACK TO NOTHING,SMOKESTACKS AND SKYSCRAPERS-the music is GREAT on this track,BRIGHT LIGHTS GO DOWN,PAPER TIGERS WITH TEETH-listen to the opening RIFF of the song-WOW, JINXPROOF and THREE CHORDS AND A HALF TRUTH, these are all great Face to Face songs and a great addition to their catalog. I also got the additional ep that comes with the lp vinyl called " The Other Half " with some bonus tracks, my advice GET IT!!!

I love F2F, but this is just a bad album. Do yourself a favor and go pick up Laugh Now, Laugh Later.... it's the last release from f2f and I think a better album.

I have listened to face to face for about 18 years now. This is a pretty good record. Different from their other records but as a listener I expect that from any band. I expect them to grow and expand their sound as they grow as people personally. Pretty Good.

Face To Face have finally made the transition to power pop, a form of punk rock which includes influences such as rock from the 1960s with rhythm and blues. The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones were a huge influence on this sound. Ironically, it was Pete Townshend who coined the term power pop during an interview. This type of music was set in stone in 1974 by The Ramones and a group called The Nerves. The Nerves were an early band formed by Paul Collins and Peter Case and the group's EP Hanging On The Telephone was released in 1976. The songs on Three Chords And A Half Truth are fairly consistent and the album flows well. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys power pop or classic punk rock.
