4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and helpful September 28, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Three Commitments of Leadership: How Clarity, Stability, and Rhythm Create Great Leaders is a book with a simple, but not simplistic message - leaders can improve their performance by focusing on clarity, stability and rhythm.

Clarity - so that participants know their goals, because misunderstandings produce inefficiency and burnout.
Stability - so that individuals feel a level of solidity in their work, allowing them the confidence to take necessary risks in their roles.
Rhythm - so that workers see their work not as conscious, painful, toil, but rather as a natural flow of achievement and progress.

I enjoyed the lack of terminology in the book. Some business writers favour long lists and unnecessarily complex language. I have no desire to learn `The twelve principles of advantageous relational interdependency,' or the `six ways to a liquid, collegiate culture.' The authors avoid this, drawing out and justifying their three commitments through accessible prose and clear, short case studies.

I believe that the book could benefit from a clearer structure. Indeed some paragraphs gave me a rather strong hint of deju vu. In addition, one might question whether anything written in the book is really a novel insight into organisational reality. I for one was not surprised to hear that clarity, stability and rhythm are important.

All things considered, as a reminder of what leadership should aspire to, and as a short motivational text, the book is certainly worth your time.

*I received a free copy of the book from the publisher.*

The title caught my eye, as I am really interested in the praxis of Leadership (the theory of leadership and its intersection with the application of leadership). The seemingly simple 3 commitments belies the power of these concepts in everyday use as a successful formula in thinking about and in thoughtfully executing a leadership role. I found the book well thought out, with easy to make connection points to the author's philosophy about the subject. It is evident that the writers are also actual practitioners of this methodology and it works well for them, thus their passionate sharing of the topic with the reader. I actually read it twice. The second time reflecting on how I can use the ideas in many situations at work and at home. Just using the ideas about creating clarity has been helpful, and surprisingly the stability
(as described by the authors) element seems to be a natural outcome from the effort to create clarity. Some science, some psychology, some real world experieince - the authors create a leadership rubric easy enough to use in all leadership situations in order to be more effective and as a way to reflect on one's past efforts and understand where you could have been more "Leaderful" in order to grow one's capacity to lead. Read it- use it- live it

5.0 out of 5 stars For Leaders Who Are Serious About Learning March 29, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The authors combine impressive leadership expertise to help readers sharpen their focus on aspects of leadership that matter most. A leader's role can be overwhelming. Keeping the three commitments in view makes the journey easier - and the results more powerful. The book offers important questions for leaders to contemplate and suggested actions to take. Leaders who like to learn will truly enjoy this book. An excellent read for those who are serious about developing themselves and others as leaders.
