Book Description

In Jay Rosenberg's lively and accessible introductory dialogue, four bright students explore a number of the central topics and problems of contemporary epistemology -- scepticism and certainty, internalism and externalism, foundationalism and coherentism, and the nature and limits of justification. Their wide-ranging discussion highlights many of the vivid and imaginative thought-experiments that have shaped both classical and contemporary reflections on the scope and character of our knowledge of the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction, November 25, 2008
This review is from: Three Conversations About Knowing (Paperback)
This dialogue is an introduction to epistemology, the theory of knowledge. The topics covered include skepticism, analyses of knowledge and the nature of justification. The treatment of skepticism addresses the skeptical possibility of the brain in the vat; the treatment of analyses of knowledge addresses traditional and causal analyses; and the treatment of justification addresses internalism and externalism, and foundationalism and coherentism.
The dialogue is clear and engaging, including various interesting counterexamples to proposed analyses. The connections between the different topics covered emerge nicely. The book is not didactic, and allows readers to think about the problems for themselves.
The book is only 58 pages, but the paperback edition is not expensive, at least at the time of writing this review. The range of coverage and the brevity mean that the book does not cover the topics in much detail. However, a helpful list of references for further reading is included. This is a nice introduction to epistemology, and should be accessible to those unfamiliar with philosophy.
