Editorial Reviews

A Perfect Circle, the multi-platinum rock band helmed by Maynard James Keenan (TOOL, Puscifer) and Billy Howerdel (Ashes Divide), issue THREE SIXTY, the outfit's first greatest hits collection.

The release also includes A Perfect Circle's first new original, studio recording in a decade with the inclusion of 'By And Down,' a song written after the band returned from their self-imposed hiatus for a series of live performances throughout 2010 and 2011.

'Billy and I created A Perfect Circle out of a now long-running friendship, and I think the music we have made reflects that personal connection and has given us the ability to further develop and trust our intuition,' explained Keenan. 'I feel THREE SIXTY is an accurate representation of that friendship and those instincts.'

A Perfect Circle formed in the late '90s with Keenan and Howerdel making up the core of the band with a number of well-known musicians having recorded and/or toured with the outfit including James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure), Paz Lenchantin (Entrance Band, Zwan), Jeordie White (Marilyn Manson), Josh Freese (The Vandals, Devo) and Tim Alexander (Primus).

The band released their first album, Mer de Noms in 2000, which debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard's Top 200 and quickly established the group as one of rock music's biggest bands of the new millennium. Following extensive international touring, A Perfect Circle began work on Thirteenth Step which saw a late 2003 release and landed at #2 on Billboard's Top 200 in its debut week. The outfit's third release, a covers' album titled eMOTIVe, was released on Election Day 2004 and featured re-imagined versions of songs by a varied group of artists including John Lennon, Black Flag, Joni Mitchell and Devo. Following the release of eMOTIVe, Keenan and Howerdel focused on their individual projects with Keenan working on TOOL's 10,000 Days and launching the multimedia electro-rock outfit Puscifer and Howerdel creating Ashes Divide. A Perfect Circle has sold over five million albums worldwide.

A Perfect Circle is no stranger to inessential releases. After releasing two solid records (Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step), the band was done in spirit, but not in contract. The band’s Virgin Records contract stipulated a set number of releases, so in 2004, the band released eMOTIVe and aMOTION1 within quick succession. Shortly after, they went on an indefinite hiatus, and I remember, as a fan, being very upset by this news. Partially because it was quite possible one of my favorite bands had broken up, and partially because I hated that A Perfect Circle chose to end its career with eMOTIVe and aMOTION, two albums that put a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. It only makes sense, then, in the context of the band’s career, that they would break their silence not with an EP, or with a full-length record, but with a greatest hits package and a live concert series2.

If you’re an A Perfect Circle fan, chances are clicked on this link just to read about one song: “By And Down”. The song is the first and only track to be released since the band went inactive in 2004. In the time before iTunes, songs like this were a way to trick long-time listeners into buying another album; I remember buying Alice In Chains’ greatest hits just for “Get Born Again”, or Nirvana’s for “You Know You’re Right.” If Three Sixty were released in that savage, pre-iTunes world, “By And Down” wouldn’t be worth your $13.99. However, today, you don’t have to buy a bunch of songs you already have to get to this new single – you just have to fork up $1.29. Unfortunately, the song is not that great. In fact, if this was featured on Mer de Noms or Thirteenth Step, I can’t imagine this song working its way onto this greatest hits collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shallow November 22, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
I am particularly upset about the absence of notable tracks such as Pet but even more so that someone like me who already owns all but By and Down must purchase the entire album to get it. Lame.

"Greatest Hits" corporate version plus one new song. If you don't have any APC albums this is the one to get. APC fans are better off downloading the new track and buying their live abulms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love A Perfect Circle? Then Check Out Katatonia! November 19, 2013
By Jack
Format:Audio CD
Well what can I say about this album? It's basically just a "greatest hits" collection featuring select tracks from their three studio releases. Songs 1 - 4 are from A Perfect Circle's brilliant debut Mer De Noms. Songs 5 - 8 are from Thirteenth Step and 9 - 12 are songs from their cover/political themed album Emotive (where 'Passive' was the only new song). The deluxe version of this release (found here Three Sixty (Deluxe Edition) [Explicit] [+digital booklet])includes a few more selections from these three albums as well as some live tracks but really, none of them (with the exception of the live version of 'Gravity') are really worth the additional cost in my humble opinion. However, there is one brand new song on both versions (and the band's first in nearly a decade) which is 'By And Down'. If you already have their other 3 albums (and if you don't, you should) then this song is really the only justification I can give for buying this album (which is why it is not a full 5 star release). It is, by no means, one of their "best" songs, but after leaving us starved for ANYTHING new from this band, we all are eating it up. It's a fairly moody sounding song that doesn't build into a particularly memorable chorus, but still a worthy song that would have had a great home on their 2nd album. I do wish some other songs would have been featured on this album. Read more ›

Great songs, but I already own them on the previous 3 EPs. After 8+ years w/o a new album long-time fans get a Greatest Hits album? Come on Reverend...
If you are new to the band and would like a good compilation album this is for you - otherwise for experienced fans this is a waste of money! I bought it nonetheless for the new track...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, much needed February 16, 2014

Perfect depiction of the two sides of Maynard, I love perfect circle, they are clearly like no other band. Hopefully they keep recording more albums. They are a very deep band and it takes a certain mindset to appreciate this type of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love A Perfect Circle January 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having always loved A Perfect Circle, I was thrilled when I heard "By and Down" on the radio. I didn't know there was anything new coming out, so it was quite a pleasant surprise. I have all the other albums, so I have all the other songs. I bought the disc because the MP3 download was included, so I got to enjoy the new music right away.
If you like A Perfect Circle (or Tool or Pusifer, anything Maynard James Keenan), you'll enjoy this album.

I pretty much like anything Maynard has a hand in, so this is not different. Very creative, talented man who surrounds himself with diversely creative and talented musicians who complement his style. Keep rockin'!

What is wrong with Maynard? Keeping Tool fans anxiously waiting for a new album so in the in the interim he releases this crap? Terrible - avoid this disc at all costs
