3.0 out of 5 stars Three Dirty Women & The Shady Acres, December 31, 2006

The book is suppose to revolve around three women, best friends, who are also landscapers known as Three Dirty Women. This is the first book I have ever read by Ms. Herman. The story pretty much revolves around Korine McFaile, one of the landscapers, and has very little to do with the other two or any landscaping as far as I could tell, except to look over some plans at one time. Korine is worried about her mother-in-law,Dora, who lives with her. Dora's increasing absentmindedness hasn't killed anyone, until now. Somehow, Dora manages to get the keys to her old car and run over poor old Olan Taggert at The Shady Acres retirement home. The police are calling it a tragic accident, but Dora is trying to tell them something and nobody is listening because they consider her mind too fragile. Korine does stumble onto a few other untimely deaths involving the elderly residents and she soon discovers that Olan was dead before Dora lost control of her car. But who killed him? The story more or less gives a lot of insight into the world of caregiving, both in the retirement home and individually. The murderer is pretty easy to pick out but there are lots of twist that will surprise you toward the end, so I do have to give the writer points for that. The problem I had was that I thought I was going to read a book about landscapers, along the lines of Rosemary and Thyme, but there was no landscaping involved and one of the "dirty ladies" was out of town the whole book, so we had a second story about this woman's relationship with her Sheriff husband. The book is a good read, just not what I expected. I'll have to check out the last book to see if there is any actually landscaping involved, or the writer may need to change the premise of the book to just a nice mystery with three women friends who may or may not all be involved.
