5.0 out of 5 stars Upping the Ante for Card Games, February 12, 2007
This review is from: Three Dragon Ante (Dungeons & Dragons Game) (Cards)
This game is really great. I call it medieval texas hold 'em. However, this game actually has greater strategic range than any form of poker where the only way to win is by winning the pot or stakes. I have introduced it to several non D&D players and they have all loved it. We now play this game regularly. The game does require betting with coins. We use gold coins that we purchased cheaply at a party store. These work great, but you could also play for quarters and buy into each game for only $12.50 in quarters. There is a slight learning curve if you are not familiar with D&D but two or three rounds of play will get you through that no problem. Highly recommended. Fun and inexpensive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a gimmick, January 3, 2007

Ya know, I figured these would be wizards attempt to "D&D" everything they can...Which they did in this product, I guess. But that doesn't take away from the fact that they're excellent cards. The shape at first had me thinking it'd be hard to shuffle, but that isn't the case.

The game itself is also fun. It lends itself well to a D&D session, or even just for fun. The box it comes with is next to worthless, due to it's size.

Weather you play Dungeons and Dragons or not this is a fun and original game. It's easy to learn. I get my family and friends to play when they come to visit; every one loves it. Instead of chips I like to play with Mardi-gras doubloons and beads. It's too bad they don't have this in Vegas. It's more fun that poker. The art is great too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Dragon Ante, Quite Impressive!, August 29, 2007
This review is from: Three Dragon Ante (Dungeons & Dragons Game) (Cards)
I bought Three Dragon Ante for the Castle Ravenloft Adventure, but I found it is an amazing stand-alone game. My friends and I played for hours last night after a D&D game! Well worth the buy!

It may seem a bit confusing when you first look at the instruction booklet, but I found it quite simple to pick up. Within one game my friends and I all knew how the rules worked and were trying to steal each other's gold.

Extremely entertaining!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent idea- so so execution, November 19, 2007

This review is from: Three Dragon Ante (Dungeons & Dragons Game) (Cards)
Three Dragon Ante was an excellent idea and creates not only memorable encounters and situations for a party of heroes, but it also allows the game to take on a whole new light as the party fights for their survival by playing a card game. It can be dropped into any campaign at any time. It can be used for huge situations in which characters lives hang in the balance of how the cards fall or how they play or it can be used for your standard bar gambling game. So the idea was excellent and the game is actually fun to play. The only problem lies within how characters can influence the game with certain skills that their characters possess. This could have been developed more and could have turned the game into more of an rpg strategy asset. Overall this part of the design is very poor and is really the only thing lacking in this otherwise excellent game. However, if you are looking to play the game outside of a dnd campaign setting the game would not be anywhere near as fun and should drop a star or 2. Three dragon ante could have been better but it's still one of the only good things wizards have released lately. Great artwork and card design as well.

This is a great little card game that plays a little like poker. Each player starts with 50 gold (recommend buying poker chips for this) and hand of cards. Play goes around the table with each players trying to make the strongest "flight" of dragons. Strongest flight takes the pot. First player to go broke ends the game -- richest player wins.

A fun card game to play with your D&D group on those off days. The rules are simple enough to learn, but there is plenty of room for strategy and lots of chances to get revenge on your friends for the anguish they caused you in D&D games :)

A cool bonus is the rules included in the back of the instruction booklet for how to incorporate the card game into an actual D&D game. So your D&D characters can join a 3 Dragon Ante card game taking place in a tavern, or some other variation of this that the DM can dream up. There are even ways for the characters to use their skills to manipulate the results of the card game, like using their Bluff skill to steal money from the pot during play.

Really a cool little game.
