Three Dreams and a Nightmare and Other Tales of the Dark by Judith Gorog

From Amazon.com:
Grade 6 Up This short story collection is introduced with a brief retelling of the Biblical story of Jacob's dream, in which he wrestles with an angel and then asks for a blessing in exchange for its release. The three dreams and the nightmare of the title are interspersed with ten other tales in a variety of genres. Literary treatments of familiar campfire tales of the macabre are included, and other stories borrow from the folktale tradition. Other genres represented include a traditional ghost tale about a restless soul and a short sci-fi story about the perfect solution for torn sweatshirts, one of the few totally original and unique stories in the collection. Although most of the themes and motifs used here are familiar, they are occasionally given an unexpected twist. The formal prose and the maturity of many of the characters (mid-adolescent and older) may deter young readers, but many of the stories are suitable for reading aloud to middle school and older students. Similar in style and content to Gorog's A Taste for Quiet (1982) and No Swimming in Dark Pond (1987, both Philomel), this will be popular where there is a demand for short stories or folktales for older readers.
