Book Description

The Three Edwards: War and State in England, 1272 is a masterly overview to this eventful and fascinating period of history. It analyses the three Kings of very different qualities and reputations: the confident and masterful Edward I who conquered Wales; Edward II who was defeated by the Scots in battle and was humiliated and deposed; and Edward III whose reign saw great triumphs against the French, but also the terrible ravages of plague. The second edition of this highly acclaimed book updates the picture throughout, in the light of recent research.

4.0 out of 5 stars A primer, but an excellent one, July 20, 1999
This review is from: The Three Edwards: War and State in England 1272-1377 (Paperback)
The time frame covered by this book is enormous, but Prestwich deftly leaves few stones unturned. I would like to have seen a bit more on Edward II, but given the focus it is understandable why he was not fleshed out quite as well as the other "bookends". An excellent "primer" for the period before delving into more detailed works (like Preswich's own individual works in the Monarchs series).

5.0 out of 5 stars A well recognized history of the period, February 20, 2012

(REAL NAME)
Prestwich's book has long been a standard, highly referenced, text for providing an overview of this particular time period in English history. It may not contain all the detail of individual books covering shorter periods of history (some of those writings can be very dry to read), but it contains sufficient material for most people having an interest in the period - for example, it covers the events associated with Mortimer's arrest and execution during the regency of the younger Edward III. The book is highly recommended. It has gone through various editions and printings, but history does not change (only the telling of it), and one edition is as good as another.
