Terrific second volume (also stands alone) with stunning art, June 22, 2009
This review is from: The Three Elders of Aran: Thorgal Vol. 2 (Thorgal (Cinebook)) (Paperback)
The Thorgal series is a long-running fantasy title from Belgium. The English translations are - oddly - not in the same sequential order. This, the second volume in the English series, is quite late in the original order. Still, this is a fantastic story - no prequel necessary.
The Three Elders of Aran is similar to the barbarian adventures out of Robert E. Howard - with the appropriately melodramatic sword & sorcery stylings. The adventure (and the Black Galley, which follows) is terrific - twisted, dark & very spooky. Thorgal is caught between his 'Norse' need to smack things with swords and his basic instinct to help out his fellow man (and woman & water-nymph).
Poor Thorgal has a fairly depressing life - most of the adventures take place in stark, grim colors - dark blue nights, mud-brown underworlds or blood-red-tinted shadows. It is also worth noting that the type is fantastic - both in the speech-bubbles and in the actions ('Splash!' is my favorite - when he dives off a boat locked tooth-and-claw with a tiger.).
As with the other Cinebook translations, there have been a few modifications for the 'sensibilities of the English-speaking audience'.
